News - DUNE HD Solo 4K

Just finished reading the PR for DUNE HD's upcoming Solo 4K player. WOW, there is a lot of information to be had. First off, the player itself looks fantastic. Small, lots of power, all the great stuff we've come to expect from DUNE HD's "just plays" experience, and with DVB-T/T2 tuners and 2.5" HDD for DVR support we have a great start for a complete media player. Add in Sigma Design's VXP video processing engine (which is supposed to be amazing), and the news that they've made the switch to ARM which should make it easier for DUNE HD to support, as well as enabling the Android OS boot option, and it's looking even better. Finally slather on a built-in Z-Wave HAC (Home Automation Controller), and I think you'll have to agree that this is something to get excited about. MSRP is a reasonable $349/€349, so the only real question is when.

News - Samsung UE55KS9000 4K display reviewed @ HDTVtest

As awesome as OLED displays are, they aren't for everyone. Whether it's cost or some other reason, maybe a curved LED backlit LCD is more your thing. From the looks of it the Samsung UEKS9000 would be a solid contender, even though it doesn't quite offer the same blacks as a full-array local dimming and has some issues with HDR content. That is unless you want a display that will support 3D content, because this guy, like all 2016 Samsungs, does not.

News - AVSForum compiles list of HDR 4K displays

HDR is arguablly the best thing about 4K, and probably the best thing to happen to consumer displays in a long time. Figuring out what a TV's capabilities are, and therefore which ones should be elminated from consideration, can be daunting. AVSForum to the resue Smile.

News - Insignia 4K RokuTVs available, maybe just Canada

There's an odd disconnect between what's in the PR email and on Roku's site. One says Canada, the other seems targeted to the US. I don't know if they're [poorly] geo-targeting my UK IP or just got their PR wires crossed. Either way, it's nice to see more options available for the best OTT platform out there.

News - 2nd Gen Amazon FireTV reviewed @ HTR

I was tempted by the new 4K FireTV, but seems a bit too focused on Amazon's services to find a place in my stack. That said, the price is right ($99) and Amazon is making great strides in the content space... Maybe next year Smile.

LG 65EF9500 4K OLED TV reviewed @ HTR

Unless you get a killer deal, or just absolutely cannot wait a few months, now's probably the wrong time to buy a high-end 2015 4K display. Much better to wait until the 2016s are well established, and pick up one of those or swoop in and pick up one of these from the bargin bin (if you can). That said, there is A LOT to like about the 2015 LG OLEDs, so the review is quite enlightening (great picture & color accuracy, not great VPP) and worth a read.

News - Speaking of 4K demo material. LG is just about ready to roll out their droolworthy Signature OLED TVs

If you had a hard time not grabbing one of LG's OLEDs last year, it's going to be even more difficult this time around. Their outstanding displays have only gotten better; both in the picture quality and the eye candy quadrants - with the G6 'Signature' line at the top. Naturally, if you're going to drop $8K on a display, you will want to see it and LG is stating to roll out the demo models. HD GURU has the details.

News - Samsung UN65JS9000 4K "SUHD" TV reviewed @ HD Guru

I'm not sure I'd settle for anything less than OLED in my next TV, but if you have to save some dosh and need one now - that's not really an option. That said, Samsung LCD's do tend to perform well, and have a good set of features, so it shouldn't hurt to much to "settle" for this "HDR Dazzler".

News - Man laments that progress takes time, sucks for early adopters. 4K Edition.

I guess I might be a bit more sympathetic if I had a 4K display, but I doubt it. Every change takes time, heck the myriad exclusively-non-HD channels still available is testament to that. So I guess while I understand that the pace of progress is frustrating at times, it’s not surprising or frankly unexpected that the current landscape is quite limited. Either way, if you’re up for a so-so-sad vent about the state of 4K video options here’s the piece you were looking for.
