The Cool Kids – Getting Old Can Be Hilarious

The Cool Kids foregoes the younger generation to bring us a comedy about the opposite end of life.  Instead of attractive, young, and physically perfect characters, FOX brings us to a retirement community, full of intelligent, experienced seniors who are not simply waiting to die.  Will the writers be able to entice younger generations to watch?

Synopsis

Airing after the revival of Last Man Standing (also reviewed here) on FOX, Fridays at 8:30pm Eastern, with the first episode currently available on their website, The Cool Kids is described as being:

…about a rowdy, rag-tag group of friends living in a retirement community who are willing to break every rule in order to have fun – because, at their age, what do they really have to lose?

The attitude described is one we all need to consider.  Maybe not to throw caution to the wind, but to enjoy life.  This could get interesting.

Characters

Some fairly big names have retired to this community.  First, we have comedy legend Vicki Lawrence (The Carol Burnett Show and Mama’s Family) playing strong-willed new ‘kid’ on the block, thrusting herself upon, well, The Cool Kids.  Next, we have veteran Martin Mull (Clue, Roseanne, Mr. Mom) portraying a well-heeled cooling mechanism for David Alan Grier’s character.  The latter of which is the patriarch of sorts, who is content with the status quo of their inner circle.  Rounding out the group is comedy gold from Leslie Jordan, who has brilliantly played a flamboyant gay character in countless TV shows.  Once again, Leslie does not disappoint.

Conclusion

Combining the skills of these actors in a single show turns out to be a perfect storm.  They each work extremely well together and play off each other impeccably.  Watching Leslie’s character, Sid, attempt to seduce Vicki’s Margaret is hysterical in all the right ways.  Sid is understandably and hilariously uncomfortable, while Margaret teasingly playing along with Sid’s pathetic attempt at subterfuge is fantastic.

In my estimation, FOX has a runaway hit on its hands in The Cool Kids.  Your age makes no difference for this show as there is comedy for all in spades.  Let’s face the fact that eventually we all will be at this point in our lives and pray that we can continue having as much fun as this group.  Maybe just with fewer arrests…
