Kwikset Announces Updated Connected Deadbolt

BaronAngle.jpg

No Home Automation (HA) is really complete without connected deadbolts making it possible to manage access. Which is exactly why I have the original Kwikset Z-Wave locks in my home. Frankly, I’m a big fan and there’s a lot to like about the locks, especially SmartKey which lets you re-key the locks whenever you want without involving a locksmith. There is one thing that I’m not in love with though; it doesn’t have a full numeric keypad which dramatically decreases the number of possible codes. I’m sure that Kwikset heard this complaint from a few sources because they will be selling an updated version later this year which addresses it.

Unfortunately, there’s no word on price yet (I did ask) so hopefully they keep it consistent with the current generation. Full PR after the click.

  • Any word on whether they have

Any word on whether they have locks that work for sliding doors?  I would very much like to get electronic locks but I have four sliding doors and the last I checked you couldn’t get locks for sliders (I use Control4 for my HA).  And I figure that there isn’t much point getting electronic locks unless I can lock up the entire house at once.

Kwikset also announced something called Kevo which works with BT pairing with your phone – the geek cred on that is even a lot higher than this!  http://www.kwikset.com/Kevo/default.aspx

I’m not aware of HA sliding

I’m not aware of HA sliding door locks, but I haven’t spent much time looking either :). The locks are pretty big (batteries, keypad, motor, etc.) so that might be why.

Kevo looks neat, but I’m not sold on it for home use. It doesn’t look like you need to authenticate to open the door, if you have the paired phone it just opens. While that’s not hugely different from a physical key, it’s a lot harder to determine what house a key belongs to than a phone should it go missing.
