This isn’t surprising to me and the display manufacturers are well aware of this. The 3-chip Sony SXRD sets are still standing up to single-chip DLP sets very well due to the color advantage at the same price point.
Flat-panel technology is focusing on LED backlights for LCD, OLED, and SED technology–all of which produce better contrast than current technologies. I’ve always believed that plasma had a superior picture to LCD for contrast reasons, but that might all change with LED backlights…we will know the answer by the middle of the year when they start showing up in local stores.
