enabling TiVo to use all avenues of mass distribution — from consumer electronics, to cable and satellite boxes and soon, the PC
Now, I’m a huge Tivo fan, but if they can’t figure out a (Hollywood/broadcast provider-accepted) way to enable all of these pieces of equipment to talk to each other, I don’t think it’s going to catch on. This market is driven by the HTPC crowd, which are not your typical home users. This means it needs to be flexible. Tivo will need to bring something huge to the table that the other players aren’t or can’t offer, in order for the uptake to be large enough to cause a shift towards Tivo. Clearly, Sage and Beyond are not geared toward the “typical” home user.
Get some cablecard support, some OTA support, and some satellite support and I’d be all over this. I’d probably even be willing to pay through the nose for it! Tell me I need to buy a certain motherboard with a certain BIOS and a certain version of Windows and I’ll do it in a heartbeat… just let ME build it. Sadly, I know this is not going to happen.
