Will the local stations currently broadcasting over VHF have to switch to UHF.

I picked up a decently rated radio shack HDTV indoor\outdoor antenna and put it in my attic. But it looks like it is not picking up the VHF channels. And I believe it has a trap to filter them out. But I thought the purpose of going digital was to free up the VHF spectrum. If this isn’t true then I’ll need to get an antenna that does both.
