I have been away from HTPCs for a year or two and have not kept up with current trends.  I am looking for an easy and cheap way to record TV at home and transfer to my lake house where I do not have nor plan to have cable.  Since I only go on weekends usually and not so much in the winter, it is hard to justify the monthly cost of cable.  What I would like to do is record at home either to hard drive or some portable media and carry to the lake and watch.  Now I know that one option is to just buy a standalone DVD recorder and use DVD media.  I had hoped that other options might be available now such as going to a USB thumb drive or SD card to allow used of reusable media other than DVD+/-RW.  I realize that there are speed issues with recording directly to these but do I have any simple options?  I don’t want to spend a great deal of time converting and moving video b/w media just to get it portable.  Standard Def is fine as I don’t do a lot of HD right now.  Any good options out there that keeps my investment low?
