the network thing is quite new to me. I just built a HTPC for the bedroom and I have’nt yet installed any player including the WMP as the default player as im not sure what plays the NAS stored movies to stream without additional software. Im hoping this is straight forward, for instance, is it better to integrate VLC or whatever player into WMC, is there any point?

If you are using Windows7 Media Center, then there is no need for you to use VLC assuming you have the proper codecs on the system.

Then you can just go to Library Setup in Media Center (you can literally 100% bypass Windows Media PLAYER) and then add the network folders you have, and then they will show up in your “VIDEOS” section in Media Center, then click it and you should play.

Depending on what your files are, like if they’re movies, then in the future you may wish to consider a Movie Manager like one of these: http://www.missingremote.com/review/battle-media-center-movie-managers
