I am considering introducing a server into the equation at home. I currently really only have one PC at home, my HTPC (the laptop is broken and I find my phone to be a suitable replacement). I have an older server I got off craigslist for cheap and WHS 2011 is on its way via NewEgg. I clicked through to buy it via MR so hopefully the site gets credit.

Is there anything I should know in advance before I have this box up and live on my network? Any caveats. My HTPC machine has the Ceton internal card in it and I plan on using the server to store recorded TV, movies and music. Currently I really only use the HTPC for live TV and very light recording. If I were to add commercial skipping all of that would still be done on the HTPC? I wish the server could host the Ceton card since it will always be on and should be much cooler than my small form factor HTPC. The Windows Home server is simply a large media share that also serves as my backup? I am a little reluctant in that this monster server will eat electricity. I could just put my 2TB drive in the HTPC and call it a day.

Looking for your thoughts and thanks in advance.

NewEgg delivered the software but I on the fence on using this on the server I have acquired. It has dual 720W power supplies and Ult320 SCSI drives. Unless I can get my 2TB SATA drive in there I might just pass on this idea. Was hoping to hear the pros of running a home media server. Right now the HTPC is doing that in part. What software can I run on the server end to take load off the HTPC? Commercial skipping? My Movies? If the Ceton card could be installed in the server that alone would have me sold despite the mega power this thing will draw.

You can host the Ceton InfiniTV in WHS2011 if that is what you want. Check out our guide.

You can also host movies on the server and perform the commercial skip analysis on the server, if that is what you want. You would probably want to do something like archive the recording to the WHS and set up DVRMSToolbox to process the archive directory on the WHS. You’ll need to configure the client to look for the commercial skip files on the server.

I probably should have made this more clean and its is my bad for not doing so. Physically the Ceton card does not work in the server I have. It only has regular old PCI expansion slots. I think I will sell the server and hold off on this idea. I am thinking a better main HTPC might be in order. Something with better cooling and a SSD for the OS and my unopened 2TB drive for storage. I have two XBOX extenders and a better machine could handle some transcoding and commercial skipping. My machine is maxed out with 4GB of ram. I could still run Home Server as the OS but then I would need a 3rd XBOX for the TV. Decisions?!
