News - Anandtech compares three low-profile HSF

If you're not planning to use your HTPC as a gaming rig, opting for a full-height chassis is a waste Smile. Finding the right low-profile HSF to cool the CPU can be a major challenge though... If you're in that boat, Anandtech has a look at three different height coolers that might make the selection process easier.

News - GIGABYTE GB-BSi7HAL-6500 reviewed @ Anandtech

With two Intel Gigabit Ethernet ports, this might just make the perfect router. Except that it's noisy, the i7 is probably overkill, and it's not that cheap (why, oh why, can't there be a dual LAN i3 "NUC"?).

News - Intel Core m3-6Y30 Compute Stick Reviewed @ Anandtech

With 2x2 802.11AC, the Intel Core m5 based Compute Stick looks like a pretty reasonable HTPC. Pricing ($390) is a bit on the high side though considering what you can do with with an Atom NUC, but if the form factor is required...

News - TIL: Skylake NUC will get healthy I.O increase in future BIOS

Articles like this one about how an issue with the Skylake NUC was identified, including the background, and news of an upcoming fix remind me of a couple things. First, why Anandtech is a great resource, and second (which mirrors my own experience) that Intel is very open to feedback to the community when something is identified. Even if you're not interested in the specifics, the article is a excellent resource around the I.O architecture sported by Intel's mobile Skylake platform.

News - MSI Cubi 2 Plus HTPC reviewed @ Anandtech

If you want a NUC like HTPC, but don't want an Intel branded system this system from MSI looks like a decent alternative. Although, it doesn't look to have CIR or HDMI CEC capability so...

News - Skylake Iris Pro pricing is out, ouch!!!

If you were waiting for Iris Pro to pickup a Skylake system, the prices have come out and they are hefty - although currently they are all Xeon models (so aimed more at enterprise workstation), so hopefully we'll see some Core branded models in a more comfortable price range soon.

News - Securifi adds Almond 3 to consumer home automation router lineup

I love the idea of a home router hub that integrates all the radios necessary for home automation (HA) in the same box. I've heard mixed reviews of Securifi's kit since it launched, but it's great that they are inovating and bringing a cheaper model to market. Hit up AnandTech for the details on their newest, cheaper, model.

News - Cherry Trail Intel Compute Stick reviewed @ AnandTech

The review reads a lot like the last rev, at least when it comes to HTPC performance, so I am a bit disappointed. That said, it is in interesting look at year-on-year gains in the form factor.

News - NETGEAR R8500 + RN214 + LACP tested @ Anandtech

To get the most out of Link Aggregation, you really need enterprise hardware. Well, that used to be true anyway. NETGEAR has had the technology in their consumer ReadyNAS line for a while, and recently brought it to their high-end Nighthawk X8 R8500 802.11AC router. If you're curious about what that looks like in real terms AnandTech has tested it out.

News - Will hard drives hang on for 20 more years?!

Twenty years ia a long time, especially in the computing world. While I think it's quite likely that hard drives will still be around, I'm not convinced that no matter how hard companies like Seagate push the envelop that it will be a mainstream consumer technology that far in the future. If I had to guess it will be primarily cold storage (like tape now), flash is only getting faster and cheaper. Once we start seeing multi-TB SSDs at reasonable prices, it will be really difficult to find a use for magnetic storage in the home. All that said, Anandtech has a really interesting writeup of what's coming down the road, well worth the read - even if you agree with me. If not, go ahead and tell me why I'm wrong in the comments Smile.
