Lowest yet for 2TB… Newegg has the Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 2TB 32MB Cache SATA 6.0 Gb/s Bare Drive for $60 after rebate with free shipping and with promo code EMCKEHF22.

Deal is good through May 30th.

I just ordered one. $79.99 less $10 with promo code and another $10  off is in the form of a rebate, pre-paid Visa card.

I hope it is not DOA and last. I’ll be using it for TV buffer and DVD rips.

I hope so too. This is my first Deskstar since my IBM 30GB! That was quite the cutting edge when it came out back in the day. I paid WAY more for the drive, too. Probably over $200 for sure.

was it the IBM deskstar 30GB that had all the problems and eventually lead to IBM selling their HDD division to hitachi? if so, i had the same one and used it for years without issue. i got lucky.

It was the Deathstar 75GB that that was notoriously bad.  My experience with that drive was far from pleasant.

i looked it up and it was the 75GXP line that had all the problems. I think they did have a 75GB model, but I remember it being the 30GB models that were notoriously bad. of course, i could be wrong. it wouldnt be the first time.

Heh, that’s pretty bad that they screwed up an entire line of hard drives of all sizes.  I only recall the 75GB being bad cause I went through 6 or 7 of them over couple weeks and eventually the store I got it from upgraded me to a 100GB to keep from coming back.  That was the first and last time I used a Deskstar until the 2TB Hitachi.

I don’t really remember the 30GB having any issues. It lasted for years until I got rid of the PC altogether.

I bought two of these on the original deal (they’re running it again with promo code EMCKDHB22).  Still waiting for those rebates to come through of course.

They both work, though while one was packed in bubble wrap inside a white box, the other was just thrown in to the shipping box in its anti-static bag.  Odd that they’d pack the two differently.

I realize I’m living dangerously with these, I’ve had two of their 1TB models die on me (the second was a replacement for the first), but I was using those in an external enclosure and I don’t think they liked being moved around much.   The reviews on these don’t seem any worse that what I’m seeing of the Seagate or WD drives anyway.

I bought some on the orriginal offer, one was DOA!  I’ll stick w/ WD & Seagate.
