I’m getting ready to move my Windows 7 OS Drive to a 30gb SSD. Any tips? I already have a seperate drive for Recorded TV. One concern I have is with online video. I watch a lot of online video (Youtube, ESPN3.com). Should I move my browser to a different drive?

30GB is fairly small so I would recommend a couple things:

1- Disable Recycle Bin for that drive (see Beginners Guide HTPC Basics)

      2- Disable Hibernation

      powercfg –h off

3- Install W7 SP1.  It requires 16GB of free space and you most likely will never have 16GB of free space after using the system.

Note: If you are are a Media Center user you will need to setup and get NetflixInternetTV installed prior to SP1.  One of the later updates prevents it from installing.

4- Reduce your pagefile.  Solid state drivers are great for paging files but you aren’t going to have much room so I recommend setting up a static size versus letting Windows configure it (I actually do this on all my systems regardless)

      5- Turn off System Restore

      6- Turn off Offline Files

Past that I would not move other cache files.  At least not initially.  See how much space you have after a month of normal usage.  You can adjust then as needed.  I see a lot of people move cache files (i.e. %ProgramData% folders, %AppData%, etc) but then you really are limiting the potential usefulness of your SSD.

        Thanks for the tips.

My current Windows 7 OS partitions is 30gb and has been for the last year. I think it will be enough. And that’s with SP1 installed. (And I still need to delete/move a lot of stuff)

        1. It’s currently set to 2gb. I can’t believe I forgot about this one. I reduce it all the time on Windows XP machines.

        2. I’m currently using hibernation with my 30gb partition. Are you recommending this because of space concerns or because of the way SSD works?

Size concerns only.  I also don’t feel hibernation adds to the CE experience for a HTPC.

There is an app floating around the handles the PCs sleep settings that I use. I don’t know what the gain is with using hibernate over sleep is but with an SSD and W7 my machine is live within a second or two.
