I’ve noticed this before, but never worried much about it.  But it baffles me why it happens.  I came into the family room this morning and my wife was watching a (crappy) movie on DVD, and since she doesn’t know what she’s doing she chose to watch it within PowerDVD from Win7 Media Center.  PowerDVD’s settings are set to 5.1 so she had to put the receiver to 6 channel input.  I noticed that my subwoofer was not on.  If playing a DVD in PowerDVD, the subwoofer does not come on.  But I have no trouble with 5.1 when I play blu-rays in 5.1.  What would be the difference?  If I had 5.1 computer speakers and my only means to get 5.1, it seems I’d be out of luck in the bass department.
