This deal makes sense if your Best Buy, and an overwhelming victory for CinemaNow which has really had a difficult time regaining space in the online streaming space which has been dominated by Netflix and others. Best Buy makes decent hardware at lower costs, which guarantees this service will be in quite a few homes.

“The software making it possible to shop CinemaNow’s video library will be included on all the Web-connected devices sold in Best Buy’s more than 1,000 U.S. stores. That means consumers who buy flat-panel TVs, Blu-ray players, personal computers and mobile phones from Best Buy would be able to get downloads of videos the same day they are released on DVDs.”

I do think this is is a move in the right direction, but CinemaNow (and everyone else) needs to be integrated into something other than Best Buy’s equipment.  Give users a way to stream into Tivo or SageTV or Media Center.  These companies need to get over the perception that people are willing to buy new hardware in order to watch movies at home.

This quote really baffles me, though:
Netflix gave an indication of the growing popularity of new video-delivery methods in its earnings report last month. It said that 42 percent of its subscribers streamed at least 15 minutes of video through its Internet-viewing service during the last quarter, up from 22 percent at the same time last year.
What are people watching that is 15 minutes or less?  For a technical person who doesn’t use Netflix, it sounds like the stream is failing and people are having a lot of difficulty watching entire programs.  Any Netflix users have a better explanation?
