Wow. Can’t believe they’re getting that kind of funding in today’s market. Here’s my take on the Boxee thing:
I think they’ve gotten the traction thus far from the Hulu and other online content delivered to the Boxee UI. Beyond that, the software isn’t THAT much different from the tons of other HTPC software programs out there except that it doesn’t do as much – not even close. Throwing in this outside funding may sound good, but in the end I don’t see this ending well. Monetization will come probably next year. First we’ll begin to see ads pushed into the UI, then there will be a premium version of Boxee (with the free version a bit crippled). At the same time, other HTPC software programs will begin catching up on the online front and the big Boxee differentiator will begin to erode.
That’s all speculation on my part so take it for what its worth. Still, I don’t see Boxee going forward much longer without needing a source of income – that’s what those investors will be wanting for their money.
