Wasn’t there some mandate (or polite suggestion – as these things don’t seem to have much bite) within the last year or so from the FCC as to how much cable companies could charge for STB rental rates?
I just had to renegotiate (I’m serious – with Time Weiner it’s not ordering, it’s negotiating) my service rates with them on Tuesday. Since my current STB rental fee was part of a “package rate” that is no longer being offered, they couldn’t tell me how much that fee was (I [i]swear[/i] it was $4-5/mo when I signed up for that package four years ago). However, the rental fee (for the same SDTV digital box I’ve had for four years) is now $10.50/mo. I nearly choked on that one.
I have no idea whether that new price is in relation to this article, but I was rather bowled over that the rental fee was now more then twice what it had been.
