I upgraded my system from Vista 32bit Ultimate to Win7 32bit Ultimate over the weekend. I also removed my Ge Force 9400 GT PCI-e video card and installed an ATI 5770 PCI-e video card. This new card works fine via VGA and DVI to monitors but it does not display anything to my Plasma TV when that is the only monitor present. If I boot to my VGA monitor, hook up the HDMI cable and then either duplicate the 1st monitor or setup dual monitors it will display to the plasma. However, even in this less than perfect scenario I cannot reboot the system because neither monitor will display until the HDMI is disconnected, the system rebooted again and the HDMI plugged in after the fact. I can actually set the TV as primary, disconnect the VGA monitor and the display will stay but again, I cannot shut the PC down because no display goes to the plasma upon reboot.
I looked online and someone had posted that I needed to uninstall the driver while connected via HDMI and then reboot and reinstall so I uninstalled the driver and removed Catalyst 10.2 but of course when I rebooted it still wouldn’t display to the plasma so I had to hook the VGA up again, reboot and then reinstall the drivers, so that wasn’t the answer.
Today, I’ve done some more research and found two more options. The first being to set the Force TV Detect in Catalyst, I will look for this setting when I get home this evening. I’m surprised I didn’t see this option in the prior six hours of rooting around in Catalyst but the link says it’s located at “Catalyst / Display Options / Force TV Detect and Force Component detect if necessary”. So if it is indeed there I will give that a try.
The second option that I found on the AMD/ATI forum was to go back to Catalyst 9.12. The question I have with this solution is whether this will remove the option to use the Dolby True HD and the DTS Master Audio. The whole point of the video card upgrade was this feature so it makes no sense to use this version of the driver if the feature isn’t there, so if anyone knows firsthand, I’d appreciate knowing if this version does support the HD audio.
Here are the links to the possible solutions I found if anyone wants to review them.

December 29, 2010 at 6:04 pm #29253Mike Garcenso i haven’t had this problem with your card specifically but i have experienced it in the past with older cards back in my OEM days.
I must highly suggest installing Logmein on that system, that way if you’re messing with settings and suddenly can’t get picture that you can restore settings via your laptop.
Also, you don’t mention, does the system show BIOS & Boot screen connected only HDMI? And then loses signal when it goes into Windows? Or completely black screen the entire time?
December 29, 2010 at 7:33 pm #29254jbachman2If I have the plasma setup as a duplicate of the VGA monitor I will see the bios run thru on both screens but after all of the drives are detected the plasma will go blank and never show the windows screens, so there is an initial connection there but it doesn’t hold.
December 29, 2010 at 7:37 pm #29255Mike Garcenok, following you there. But then if you ONLY have the Plasma connected HDMI, and boot up…nothing the whole way through?
btw, you hint at this earlier, this exact same system worked fine with the older NVidia graphics card, right?
December 29, 2010 at 7:46 pm #29256jbachman2Correct, if the plasma is the only thing hooked up nothing ever displays on the screen.
Yeah, the Nvidia 9400 GT worked great but I was using the component connections, not the DVI or VGA.
Full path disclosure: HTPC via HDMI to Onkyo TX-SR608 to HD Fury 2 via HDMI to Component connections on the Plasma screen.
December 29, 2010 at 8:04 pm #29257Mike Garcenwait, so your plasma does not have HDMI?
HTPC (ATI) >HDMI> ONKYO >HDMI> HDFury2 >COMPONENT> PLASMA
That accurate?
December 29, 2010 at 8:52 pm #29258jbachman2That is correct. Of course with the 9400 GT I guess it was even more complicated:
HTPC (Nvidia) >Component> ONKYO >HDMI> HDFury2 >COMPONENT> PLASMA
December 30, 2010 at 4:09 am #29260jbachman2I mention I am using a HD Fury 2 and now I feel like I have a Scarlett Letter :oP
Still won’t reboot to the HDMI output but I have it setup as the single monitor now and it looks like I can toggle between Directv and the HTPC so I guess I’ll not reboot ever at least until I get sick of doing that and just reinstall my 9400 GT…
December 30, 2010 at 5:37 pm #29261Mike Garcenno chance you have another HDMI display that you could try, huh? I’m literally out of guesses. I want to say it’s drivers, but the lack of bootup image is what makes me wonder.
any new BIOS for your mobo?
December 30, 2010 at 5:53 pm #29262jbachman2I am going to take the receiver out of the loop tonight and see if that makes a difference. Beyond that, I may look into the GT 430 at some point. My fall back position would be to reinstall the 9400 GT card and worry about HD Audio another day.
I’ll check and see if there is a bios update for my mobo while I am at it. Thanks for your help and if / when it is resolved I’ll post what happened.
December 31, 2010 at 9:35 am #29266babgvantHave you tried an EDID override?
