So indulge me for a minute here…
Let me run down the cases I’ve used and/or built in for others:
Ahanix D5 — early genuine HTPC case (not just a repurposed desktop case). Lower height, yet still accepts full height cards. Proprietary PSU, and 60 mm exhast fans, little to no air flow anywhere else in the case. Clean front without any extra lights but the VFD. VFD not dimable or able to turn off.
Silverstone LC10 — another fairly early design, full size, 80mm fan to move air up front (though the effectiveness is in question) but has only 60mm fans for exhaust which means little air flow but quiet or loud fan noise but high air flow. Power and hard drive LEDs. Big ass power and reset buttons which aren’t the best idea especially if the case were to be used around clumsy people and/or kids.
OrigenAE X11 (early revision 2 model, circa late 2005) — My current HTPC case — Decent layout with 80mm fans and optional spot for 80mm fan by hard drive cage. 80mm fans not as quiet as they could be, newer reviews of OrigenAE cases say they are quieter, so the fans must have changed. God awful individual wire per pin for USB, 1394, and audio on the front panel, this too has changed in newer OrigenAE cases thankfully.
Because of the VFD with remote power on setup the power button is integrated into a PCB with blue LEDs soldered around it for a blue ring around the power button, this is quite bright with no easy way to defeat it. VFD is OK, it’s dimmable, but not able to be disabled completely for a “night mode.” A huge pain to pull out drive cages due to depth and narrow clearance on the sides for screwing in drive cage back into place. Grommeted hard drive cage is a great plus.Thermaltake Tenor — This was a random review unit, I had an extra test box built in this for a few months. Just awful blue LEDs made to glow from under ‘wave’ design of the front panel, thankfully these could simply just not be plugged in to power from the PSU. All drives hidden with flip down panels, when flipped down the fact that this was a repurposed desktop ATX case was clear. Blue LED hard drive and power lights. Loud 60mm fans in the back and a cheap 80mm fan up front, all using 4-pin molex connections instead of 3-pin style which could be regulated through a Zalman SpeedFan, etc.

So what I would like is a fairly simple, yet classy black HTPC case.
I don’t want a VFD , they don’t serve a lot of purpose from more then a few feet back, and usually aren’t able to be disabled completely.
I do not want a big ring around the power button that glows, if there is one I want it to defeatable.
I want to avoid having a hard drive activity LED, though this can just not be connected.
I don’t mind micro ATX but I want it to be full height so I can easily swap out peripherals. -
