I call bullshit on that article. I get that not all video compression is bad but when you’re trying to cram 4-6 HDTV channels into 6 mhz of bandwidth *cough*comcast*cough* then you’re just being jerks. I’ll put $10 on the table right now that says when comcast adjusts the amount of compression they use they don’t even *check* picture quality, all they care about is that it gives them enough room to cram another channel on that frequency. Case and point, I recorded a bunch of BSG episodes off SciFi HD (one of the channels they announced would be getting further compression) the other day and there was this one scene where a ton of dust was getting kicked up and it looked like absolute crap. There was blocking all over the place; it looked more like a mosaic of a picture than an actual picture.
And I have zero sympathy for cable companies who bitch and moan about how customers raising expectations are to blame for their lowering picture quality. Here’s a crazy idea, instead of announcing that you’re screwing over the customers who are using cable boxes, paying you $5 a month, and helping you move forward with technology you announce that your pulling 10 analog channels a year for the next 3-5 years?
