I am hoping that there are some others who have a PS3 that can give me some advice for setting it up to play online. I have been having some trouble with it for the last few weeks. I’ve had it since last June and have had it connected to my network and have been able to access the Playstation Store and download updates. But I’ve tried playing more games online lately and have noticed that I’ve been having a lot of trouble in that area. I bought my son the newest Lego Star Wars game and thought it’d be great if he could play with someone else online, but any time that I tried to connect it’d show a list of rooms and then they’d disappear after a few seconds and say “No Games Available”. So I decided to do some research and found some others that were having the same problem. So then I learned that there are several ports that should be opened to be able to play PS games online, and that when setup is complete on the PS3 network config that it should be a certain “nat”.
Here’s what I did. I changed my PS3 to a static IP address on my network and manually configured that part of it. The rest I set to automatic (and I’m using a wired connection, by the way). I have a D-Link DI-524 router, and I forwarded the ports that portforward.com told me to forward (I followed their instructions for the DI-524 and Playstation Network). When the PS3 does its test at the end of the setup everything’s OK, but the uPnP says “Not Available”. But I have uPnP enabled on my router.
My DSL modem is a combo modem/router that the phone company gave me (when my modem-only modem died). I have the WAN port from the router going to Port 1 of the modem and all of the PCs and consoles plugged in to the DI-524. This has always worked fine for internet and PC gaming. I unplugged the cable from Port 1 of the modem and plugged the PS3 cable in to Port 1 and re-ran the setup on the PS3. This time I set everything to automatic (because I’m not sure how to get in to the setup of the modem/router). This time when the test was done it said that uPnP was OK or available, and it also gave me a different type of “nat”. I tried Lego Star Wars again, but still didn’t have any luck joining anyone’s game. However it could be that I need to forward the ports on that router now. But I don’t know how to get in to the setup as the phone company didn’t give me any kind of manual, and I don’t even know if they want people to be able to get in to the setup so I don’t know if they’d tell me if I called tech support or not. I bought Motorstorm yesterday and it required an update to play online. I tried twice to download the update and both times it failed (I was going through the D-Link router). I’m thinking it might be best to go through the modem/router for everything, but then I wouldn’t have wireless available for my wife’s desktop and my laptop. Has anyone had any luck getting their PS3 to play without problems online?
