This can be a pretty frequent issue, and often the first thing I take a look at when helping a friend diagnose a problem with the stereo. One of my buddies always complained that the center channel volume was too low and so they were constantly playing surround sound sources really loud an then turning it down when switching to stereo sources. Just taking the time to do a quick level/distance setting by ear without a decibel meter can often lead a more pleasant listening experience if you haven’t already taken five or ten minutes to do it.
