OK, I couldn’t wait ’til Iron Man was released so I could run out and get it on blu-ray, which I did yesterday.  I was prepared to be blown away with the sound, just from the few movies I’ve watched on blu-ray.  It has Dolby TrueHD, so I had to choose “AC3 Mixing” in PowerDVD to get 5.1 through optical, but I have to say I was a little disappointed.  The bass was pretty awesome, but not as much surround as I would have thought.  I don’t know if it was because I was not getting the full effect of Dolby TrueHD, or if it was just how the movie was done, or if Dolby just isn’t that great when compared to DTS.  The first 2 movies I watched had DTS-MA and sounded fantastic; they may have spoiled me.  When an animated straight-to-disc movie like Next Avengers sounds better than a big budget blockbuster like Iron Man, something’s wrong.

On a side note, does anyone else have an Envy 24-based sound card?  I hooked my sound card using the analog multichannel out Saturday night, but it totally messed my system up.  After I went in the software of the card and chose 5.1 out, I couldn’t use the spdif output any more.  Even when I went back in and tried changing it back to spdif, it wouldn’t work.  It showed spdif was selected, but no sound would play.  I had to end up using System Restore to get it back.  Anyone know if spdif and analog out can be used without it having to change it each time and without it messing up the system?  I’d like to use spdif for SageTV (with AC3 Filter) and use the analog outs with PowerDVD.  I also noticed in PDVD after I changed from “Use SPDIF” to “6-channel” that there was an option to redirect bass to all channels.  My system is actually 5.0, as I use a passive sub that sends the signal to my left & right mains.  There USED to be an option in PDVD for “LFE Mixing” that sends all the sub sounds to the mains.  But now (maybe with the updated versions) it seems like it’s saying that it sends the bass to all of the speakers.  I don’t want to send any bass to my surround speakers.  Am I understanding PDVD correctly?  Did it, in fact, change to this different bass management?
