My current setup uses a VMC PC (will upgrade to win7 ultimate when comercially released) and a couple of Linksys extenders and an xbox360. I store DVD’s, Blueray and HD DVD on a WHS. I also store music, videos and photos on WHS
As the extenders can only play mpg’s, and I don’t want to convert >3tb of movies to mpg, I am looking for an alternative for extenders. As we watch almost zero life TV, I think it ok to move to an extender that can handle everything except life tv but can play VOB’s (video_ts) and mkv’s. It should however be able to play dvr-ms and the new Win7 recordings
So my question – what is the best extender device to go with – AppleTV, Mac Mini, PC, or other. And what is the best front-end software to use – XBMC, Boxee or other? I would prefer some wireless-N action but can get cat5 to most locations if needed.
Low cost and low maintenance is big as I spend too much time on VMC as it is
