I need some advice. As part of a project that I’ve undertaken to finish our third floor and turn it into a family room, I had planned on building a WHS 2011 box to store my media and Ceton tuner and build an HTPC that would be able to play media off the network drives and share tuners from the Ceton. My inital plan was to turn my existing HTPC into my WHS 2011 box and build an AMD Fusion based HTPC with only an SSD for the OS. Take a look at what I have to work with and let me know what you think about my idea.

Current HTPC: Case: Antec One Hundred, Mobo: Asus M2A-VM, Memory: 4GB DDR2, HDD: 1.5 TB WD Green, Tuner: Ceton Infinitv4, Video: Sapphire Radeon 5570

    In my closet: 64GB SSD, Sapphire AMD Fusion Mini-ITX, 4GB DDR3, Lian-li PC-C36B, 250GB WD HDD

Proposed HTPC: Lian-Li case, Sapphire mobo, 64GB SSD, 4GB DDR3

Proposed Server: Antec case, Asus mobo, 4GB DDR2, 1.5TB HDD, Ceton and Radeon 5570, 250GB for WHS OS

To help avoid network issues, you’ll want a quality Intel NIC for both client and server. Your switch is also hopefully up to the task.

Be cognizant if you are planning to record to SSD what it can potentially do to the lifespan.

I’m not sure if Fusion will be up to the task of utilizing 4 DCT streams so perhaps someone can comment on that. It definitely makes going for an Intel NIC even more important though.

I’ve had so many weird networking issues in the past I ended up getting intel nic’s and installing them in my WHS box, my HTPC and my office pc. I even ended up getting a higher end switch to support it all.
