The new G98 core is very quietly being phased in under the same name as the older G86 core. The G98 core is quite a bit different then the old G86 core when it comes to video decoding. The new core has full H.264 decode like the GeForce 8600, but it adds full VC-1 decode as well, to be competative with ATI’s UVD. This should make the 8400GS a far more tolerable proposition. The upcoming GeForce 8200/8300 IGPs will have Generation 3 PureVideo HD support as well.
What’s sad is that this is such a quiet changeout, without any model number change, getting an 8400GS with a new core is hardly certain.
