[quote=PAPutzback]The attached file shows what I am seeing. I am not using a widescreen monitor but I have about 3 inches of space being wasted on both sides. And I have to scroll down to get to my control panel. Can the page resize dynamically so the ads are right aligned in a frame and the posts left aligned and allowed to use the wasted space so the posts aren’t so compressed?
I’d also like to see an ads page so I could browse all the vendors and possibly remove ads from the right side all together. What would that cost me to have a profile with no ads?[/quote]
The user control panel is being moved to the top. For the ads…I’ll let CEO respond.

Testing something…
November 19, 2010 at 4:57 pm #29059skirge01Are they really that annoying? I’m just trained to ignore them entirely. Every once in a while, I’ll take a look to see what Google is tracking me on (then I go to their Dashboard and fix that, hehe).
What exactly annoys you about them? Is it WHAT’s being advertised? WHERE the ads are? The TYPE of ad?
We definitely appreciate all the input!
November 19, 2010 at 5:49 pm #29060Mike GarcenThanks for the feedback. Not sure a “page of ads” would work to be honest. Maybe in time we’ll be able to setup a subscription model like ArsTechnica, where we can have members for a small fee not see ads, but honestly we’re not close to there yet. Without ads the site wouldn’t exist unfortunately.
Btw, FWIW the ad relevancy should improve over time as well. We’re looking for ways to hopefully make them useful and unintrusive as much as possible.
Keep the feedback coming though! We are working on the “too much” white 🙂
November 19, 2010 at 7:14 pm #29061skirge01LMAO! I love the way the site automated the title of your reply. Almost makes it look like a diss.
BTW, I have nothing against ads on any site I visit regularly and I intentionally do not block them because of the minimal revenue that comes from it. However, if a site is showing me ads I find offensive, intrusive, or annoying, I definitely let them know. Intellitext is one of those really annoying ads I block universally.

Found it after Recent Activity.
November 25, 2010 at 3:43 am #29101jennyfurSo it took forever for me to load pages on the site tonight, been trying for hours. Now that it’s back and speedy again, it seems like I’m on a backup or something… my HUGE sig is back! Trying to fix it again.

It is the same, one of the CSS stylesheets (the primary) is hosted on a different site than http://www.missingremote.com and it was timing out for some reason. That caused the slow page load and visual oddities.
November 25, 2010 at 4:10 am #29103mikinhoLooks like it was a DNS change that caused the time out and issue. Shouldn’t happen any more.
November 28, 2010 at 8:46 pm #29126jennyfurHUGE sig issue still hasn’t gone away. It seems that the sig it shows for the comments threaded view in news posts is different from the sig it shows in forums (how the hell?). It’s showing my old sig (with image tag) in the comments view, which ends up all huge and overlapped. Meanwhile, the edited version (just text, small) shows up fine in the forums. HELP

Hi Jennyfur. Your account (and Skirge’s) had some inconsistencies from the migration. I believe I’ve fixed it but I had to clear your old signature. Can you update your signature and see if it works well now?
November 30, 2010 at 3:20 am #29141flipsJust spending some time on the site again and I just wanted to echo some of the earlier comments on recent forum posts. In the past that was the only way I was able to get around the forums.
Reason being is that there are a lot of sections in the forums that are pretty small variations from one another. If you look at avsforums they took the opposite approach and there is there’s one htpc forum, (with a linux sub-forum those guys always want to be different 🙂 ). Maybe I’m in the minority, but I would be fine with narrowing down the forum to 5 different ones like:
-HTPC (Hardware and Software)
-Other HT hardware
-Hot Deals
-Movies / off topic
-Home theater construction and automation
Looking now at the last post date, there are a lot that haven’t had a post since early 2009.
I think that would make it lot easier to take a quick peak at the forums to see what the latest discussions are instead of checking the remote section, and then going over to HTPC hardware, then software, etc…
Just my 2 cents…
November 30, 2010 at 8:57 am #29143Mike Garcengreat feedback. Optimizing the number of forums is definitely on our to-do list, just want to make sure we get the kinks out of the system and make the site run as good as possible before focusing on that part. But keep em coming!!

I wanted to focus on this because I was also one who frequently used the recent posts at the top of the old site to get around the forums. Now, I use the “Recent Activity” list on the right to see what’s new. One definite improvement there is that the list is much longer, so more “new” activity is visible right on the front page now.
However, IMHO, what the old site didn’t do very well was show you all the unread posts/comments you had. For that, the new “Recent posts” link under your username on the right side is a welcome addition and I use that whenever I’m so far behind that the “Recent Activity” has more “new” info than can be shown. (Then I wonder why I was away for so long, but that’s another story… 😉 )
We’re still tweaking both of these, but I think everyone will like where we’re heading with them.
Definitely keep the ideas coming. Also, if you have strong feelings about something another person has mentioned, please feel free to chime in, as that will help us determine what we need to focus on.
