I came across 3 PS3’s this weekend (let’s just say some stores’ troubleshooting techs are not very knowledgeable). I ended up putting one in my “computer room” and tried playing some video files on it from the HTPC. I also ended up with a Dell Inspiron 530s. We bought our youngest son a 25″ monitor for Christmas, and I plan on putting either the Dell or a PS3 in his room. Originally I was going to put a computer in there, but now that we have these PS3’s…? The PS3 may be the simplest, but there’s a few things I don’t like about the PS3. One, the main reason for putting something in his room is to play ripped movies from the server; something the PS3 will not do. Second, I don’t like how it throws all the video files into one grouping on the PS3’s menu…recordings, divx files, etc. Not only that, the names that it goes by on the recordings is the show’s title for that show; so for example if the show is Fringe and the title is “Time Traveller”; the PS3 shows “Time Traveller”. I had no idea what I was looking at. Third, the ATSC recordings that I made when I was using SageTV have no sound when played on the PS3. Surprisingly, .wtv files play fine. And I won’t count this as a “fourth”, but I didn’t think the video quality of the HD recordings looked very good on the PS3. Does anyone else use the PS3 for stuff other than bluray and games? What’s your opinion?
