My son has a 37″ HP LCD TV.  I have his PC connected to it by HDMI at 1280 x 720.  He’s had this set up now for about a year and half and whenever he’d play a game for the first time, most of them were default at 1024 x 768.  So when the game would launch his screen would go crazy and there were lines all in it and it seemed to jump up and down.  If the game didn’t support 1280 x 720, I’d have to run it at 800 x 600.  But the last few weeks I installed a couple of games that came up at 1024 x 768 and the screen looked normal.  I didn’t even really realize what the resolution was set at or thought that it had adjusted to 1280 x 720 by its self.  But when I went in and looked I saw they were still at 1024 x 768.  I kind of shrugged it off at first, but I’ve thought about it more and more, “Why?”.  Why now, did it seem to look OK?  Then it hit me this morning that he’s had a 6600GT in there for about a month now instead of his previous FX 5700.  But both of them has been connected by a DVI to HDMI cable.  So I’m guessing the difference is the 6600GT, buy why?  Is it scaling the 1024 x 768 to 720P where the FX 5700 was not?  Or perhaps is it a driver issue?  I’m guessing I installed updated drivers when I put in the 6600GT (I don’t really remember).  What’s your take?
