On one hand I find it nice how Sage TV has matured through out the years. Streaming to an iSomething is cool too (Android?) but on the other hand I have to wonder what the benefit is.
In my mind anyone who is geek enough to traipse around the house watching DWTS on an iSomething probably already has multiple LCDs/plasmas all over the place…maybe even one of those refrigerators with the PC in the door.
So where would this come in useful? In the bathroom? That’s a little over the top unless you’re 16 and streaming adult content.
Maybe I’m just missing something.
November 9, 2010 at 2:40 pm #28967First off, this was done by the community, not SageTV themselves. (Although, to be fair, they do generally give out loads of assistance when the developers ask for it.) Android will probably be added later, but since this is being developed by one of the community users, he started with the Apple market.
Second, the benefit is for people who aren’t always at home to watch TV or don’t have a TV in every room. This allows them to bypass a full computer when they may only have their phone or if they don’t normally bring a computer with them on the train to work. The response to the plugin has been overwhelming and the developer was shocked, so clearly there’s a great demand for this. The kitchen might be another nice place to stream to your iPad for cooking shows or if you have the type of family which prefers to watch TV at the dinner table instead of talk.
Sometimes it’s tough to see beyond our own uses for technology.

iPad – take the TV with you to a room that has no TV. Traveling with the iPad? Watch TV on it on the go. Standing in line at the DMV or grocery store? Catch up on the game or a show from your iPhone. This by the way is a 3rd party plugin – not created by SageTV.
May not be useful to you, but the response on this add-on from the community has been pretty big. And yes, lots of people asking for the same thing on their Android, Win7 Phone, etc devices 😉
November 11, 2010 at 4:20 pm #28969I’m very interested in this and it my cause me to get an iPad (have an iPhone now) as we only have one tv in the house. But as I’m going to rebuild my HTPC for win7/sage7, and am concerned about this taxing the processor, here’s my question: would I be better off with one of the AMD low watt quad-core or an Intel i3 or i5 dual core?
November 11, 2010 at 6:48 pm #28970According to the review conclusion on SPCR, I wouldn’t go with the AMD low power quads. I would look at the regular athlon x4s compared to the i5. For video encoding the x4 640 seems to be the better choice as its slightly faster than the i5 650 and i5 661 (based on the benchmarks on anandtech found here http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/117?vs=188 (benchmarks are for the 635 which is at 2.9GHz, the 640 is slightly faster at 3.0GHz) and its $65 and $110 cheaper respectively at newegg.
The “E” processors total power consumption during our timed benchmarks was only 10% better than the faster 95W and 125W AMD quad cores, and still a ways off from Intel’s Core i5s. They are slightly more energy efficient when idle, but the difference is too small to make a real impact in the grand scheme of things. In addition, the price premium attached to these processors makes them rather poor values; equivalent or better performance can be found in the ~$100 Athlon II X4 635. From what we can gather, the only real selling point of these CPUs
is the lower operating temperature… but then again, most standard AMD processors undervolt fairly well.Full review can be found here http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1054-page6.html
November 20, 2010 at 4:53 am #29070xjboonieso what would be a good ATX motherboard to go with the 635/640?
December 7, 2010 at 5:03 am #29169xjbooniewould this be a good motherboard to pair with one of those CPUs?
