So I screwed up when I bought a new TV for work. I wanted a TV for the office that could display presentations. I like the idea of a TV over a projector because it can be used with the lights on.
I was at Andersons awhile ago and they had a moving sale. I picked up a Mistubishi WD 65737 65″ DLP TV for just over a grand. I didn’t study it and I just figured it would be good enough for my use.
BUT, the TV doesn’t have a PC input or overscan controls for use with a computer. As a presentation display, it needs to be easy for people to come in and connect and get a good picture. The overscan on the HDMI port is excessive without an underscan mode, and worst of all, it doesn’t have VGA input! 90% of my computers in the office are VGA only.
I can’t return the TV. So, I have a few options:
1. Sell the TV to my parents. They need a new TV to replace their 65″ CRT that is just about the worst looking TV I have ever seen in my life. Then, buy a new TV for the office. The new TV will probably have to be of the LCD variety so I can get full pixel accuracy without overscan. These are expensive in the 60″ class.
2. Take the TV home and trade the office for my Sony 60A3000 60″ SXRD display. The Sony has an underscan setting on all inputs, and it has a PC input. The Mistu would go home with me. I would get 5 extra inches that I really don’t need ( I sit 11 feet away) and the black levels and picture quality of the Mistu are not quite up to par with the Sony. They are sorta close, but I haven’t done an apples to apples comparison with the Mitsu calibrated correctly. I love the Sony and don’t really want a step down in quality so I don’t really favor this option
3. Trade my Sony TV to the office. Take the Mitsu home, live with it for awhile and see if I like it. If I don’t then sell it to my parents for the full price I got it for (my parents are cool like that) and then use that money towards a new 60″ Pioneer or Panasonic kick ass TV. I would love to use this as an excuse to upgrade to a TV with great black level performance. I was kinda waiting for the OLEDs but a Plasma could work and I might be waiting forever for a 60″ OLED at a reasonable price. Plus, i get in before California bans them.
4. Deal with it. This option sucks IMO. It really sucks as a PC monitor without overscan controls but I could set up a dedicated PC and set the video card to do a custom resolution that eliminates overscan. Basically, all presentation materials would need to be transferred to this PC first instead of just attaching a computer. A memory stick would be able to do this.
5. Sell it on ebay or craigslist.
