I like this article….I for one will compare my uses….
1. Personal Video Recording – Absolutely! One of the best uses.
2. DVD Player – Again, absolutely. I have a $1000 Denon DVD player and my HTPC beats the picture quality.
3. Photo Viewer – Haven’t gotten around to doing this but is very close on my list to do. What program does the mapping? Links please!!
4. Media Library – This is a HUGE WAF factor. My wife loves this! As soon as I finished ripping all the DVD’s to the hard drives, she was hooked. She now proclaims the HTPC is hers and that I have to get my own…….darn……
5. Home Automation – Haven’t tinkered with this yet and don’t know if its worth it yet…..
6. Gaming – This is a toughy. While I like the idea, the interface is doesn’t work for me. I like alot of FPS games and playing them on the couch with a less than ideal gaming keyboard/mouse is hard and not really as enjoyable. So I play my PC games on another computer and let the 360 do the work on the main tv.
7. Browse The Web – Not so much, but there if I really wanted to. Easy navigating still tough. Rather do it on a dedicated machine.
8. High Def DVD Player – I personally like the idea but won’t plunge into it until the audio aspect catches up. Part of the HD experience to me are the new sound codecs and the PC realm isn’t up to it yet. When it does, I’ll be there….
9. PlaceShifting & Remote Scheduling – Similar to #1, so yeah.
10. Distributed Audio/Video – I actually spent a huge chunk of the weekend routing cat5e cable through the attic and walls to do exactly this and prepare for HD quality data streaming. Any household with more than 1 machine should utilize this ability.
