I have 2 problems on 2 different machines.

1.) I’ve noticed for the past several days when I go to shut down my son’s PC that there are updates that need to be installed.  First I thought it was strange that there were updates EVERY time I had to shut down, but after I started paying closer attention I noticed that is was ALWAYS 12 updates to install (after hitting “Shut down” it would say, “Installing update 1 of 12…”).  Today I noticed that the yellow icon in the start-up tray was there so I thought, “Great, I can install it while it’s on instead of when it’s shutting down…maybe that’ll work.”  That didn’t work either, but at least I can see what’s going on.  The first thing it tried to do was run the Validation tool, but it comes up after a minute saying it didn’t install.  Then it says to click on the “X – Failed” to see what happened.  Only it doesn’t have an “X” beside it, it has “- Cancelled”.  But I didn’t cancel it.  Anyone ever had updates that just won’t install?  It’s a legit version and I’ve never had trouble with Windows updates before.

2.) After problem #1, I decided to download the ISO version of Service Pack 3 from Microsoft on my own main PC (since I can’t download anything from Microsoft on his PC).  But I’ve had a problem with big downloads for quite a while.  Sometimes when I download things it will stop and say completed before it’s actually complete.  For example I’m on my 3rd try of download the SP3 ISO.  It got to 200-something MB and said it was complete, but actually it’s about 544mb.  I say that it happens with big downloads, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be big…it’s just a greater chance that it will happen with a big download because the longer it takes the better the odds are that it will do this.  But I’ve had 20-something or 50-something MB downloads to do this, too.  At times I’ve thought it was this Atheros ethernet on my PC, but I also had the same problem a lot before I upgraded my system…and that had a different ethernet card.  It’s also happened on my lapotp, so it’s not computer specific.  Evidently, it’s internet provider related??  Anyone had this problem or any suggestions?
