“I know I swore I wouldn’t post about Windows Home Server, but you all love free.”
I’m curious now. Why in the world would you choose to ignore this software? Or at least rather not post about it? This is the best thing (IMHO) ever to come along for folks with a lot of multimedia files and should be covered by any site that touts themselves as being a source for HTPC enthusiasts. The key to my interest in the WHS is the sheer simplicity of it. Even I can use it!
The big advantage to this system is once purchased, the end user only connects two cables. (A keyboard and monitor are required for installation for those building their own)
1. The plug in the wall
2. The Lan cable
The third step is to run the Connecter CD on the Client(s) and you are good to go. All your files that you want can be shared. All your PC’s on the WHS can be accessed from the net. If you lose a HDD no worries, you data is automatically backed up-even your system drive.
Run out of space? No problem- add a new drive to the pool using a simple wizard. Out of bays? Swap out for a larger HDD. By the way, no more drive letters to fool with. You just build a storage pool. Easy to find-share files. Easy to use with software such as My Movies. Just keep ripping films to the “Videos” folder. Every PC in the house can access them.
Lose your system HDD on the WHS? No problem, put in a new drive and run the Installer CD. Server is restored.
What a great way to press into service an old motherboard CPU etc you have laying around! THis is what I did and I love it. I can even hook up old USB external drives to add to the pool.
I don’t get it.
