Wireless/wired internet safety while traveling

So I’m going to be spending up to the next year living out of a hotel in Mississippi, and am wondering what I can do about internet safety.  The hotel has both wireless (but not sure if b/g/n) and wired internet.  Is there something I can buy or do that will improve my safety, i.e. protect passwords when I access a bank or even just facebook?
