If you do go with a new platform, it is very difficult to beat an Intel board. The stability and support are top notch. I’ve got 4 DH67BL boards so you can see that I am sold on them 🙂

I have had systems that had flaky resume from sleep in the past. It was the motherboard that was causing the issue.

Why deprive yourself of what you really want for a year? Just keep a good image around and you’ll be prepared. You can also go with a more proven option. It’s not like the 2nd gen SSDs are slow by any stretch.

          Aaron Ledger

In my brief experience with SSDs, I’ve been using the following: 120 GB G.Skill Phoenix Pro (in service 10 months), 120 GB Vertex 2 (in service 5 months) and 96GB Kingston V+100 (in service 4 months). The first two use SandForce controllers while the latter uses a Toshiba. The only issue I had was with the Vertex 2 drive. I had to RMA it twice before I had one that worked well in the target system. While OCZ was very good about accepting and sending replacements, return shipping was on my dime.

From what I understand, most Comcast markets are Copy Freely on everything but premiums such as HBO. This would give you flexibility to choose different software. Unfortunately, SageTV is no longer an option for new users. You could look at MythTV or a variant if you are comfortable with Linux. There are some people who have been working on getting the InfiniTV to work in Linux.

                Aaron Ledger

That is odd. Is the switch port indicating a good link with the server? Have you tried a different switch port and a different cable? Can you log into your router and see if your server is assigned an IP address (assuming your router is also acting as a DHCP server)?

There are no third-party add-ins that I am aware of which will bring that functionality to WMC.

The feature may exist in other software packages. How are you planning to bring TV content into the HTPC? If it is via a DCT (CableCARD tuner) and your cable provider marks channels as Copy Once, you are currently limited to WMC for those.

                    Aaron Ledger

Unfortunately, this feature doesn’t exist in WMC.

Many moons ago when I had Dish Network, their DVR did have this feature and at the time, my wife and I sometimes found it useful. Over time though, the feature became much less useful to the point that my wife and I never needed it because we completely transformed our viewing from a world of live TV (and commercials) to one where everything is recorded prior to viewing.

Perhaps you can overlook this deficiency in favor of all the other functionality that WMC will give you over the terrible experience you currently suffer from with the cable DVR.

                      Aaron Ledger

Why go for such a large case? Unless you absolutely require full-size expansion slots or a huge amount of internal drives, you’ll be much better off with a smaller profile. There are several options that have provision for internal IR, but let’s determine what your exact requirements are and go at it from that angle vs. selecting a case and then finding out it is way more than you need.

Are full-size expansion cards a requirement?

How many expansion cards will you need?

Besides internal IR, what other requirements do you have for the case?

Did you try a different browser? Is there anything in the manual where you need to do something special to enable the managed aspect of the switch?

Just a guess, but perhaps the old router doesn’t support UPnP properly.

                                Aaron Ledger

Those are certainly some pathetic speeds. I easily hit 800 Mbps+ on WHS 2011 with essentially nothing other than a default config, consumer-grade GigE switches and Intel NICs.

First step: Update ALL of your drivers to the latest including BIOS. Use the manufacturer drivers and not those from Windows Update. Do this on both client and server.

Second Step: Try a transfer bypassing your Linksys. Verify you can get a decent transfer speed directly connected.

Third Step: Add the Linksys back and try again. Honestly, it is worth buying a GigE switch for the type of transfers you are doing. I have had good luck with this very reasonably priced D-Link switch. Wireless file transfers are going to be slow no matter what. If you are intent on doing them, consider upgrading to a Wireless-N solution.
