I suppose I should have said a serial port that complies with RS-232.

Sorry, just thought [that while correct] it was funny to call a serial (clunky, legacy) port on a PC -> RS-232 (high-end A/V feature).
babgvantKeymasterwrite a bat/cmd file that iterates through all the files in the folder looking for ones w/o artifacts then call showanalyerengine.exe pathtofile.ext
babgvantKeymaster
You’d have to have an RS-232 port on your PC though.

LOL – I think you mean serial port 🙂
babgvantKeymasterSorry, I don’t remember what the setting was called exactly (been a LONG time since I used YAC) just that one of the modems I used would only work with that setting enabled.
babgvantKeymasterVery tempting… There’s a MicroCenter not far from here.
babgvantKeymaster
YAC. Hmm, could that be the issue. A very outdated piece of software? For what its worth, a test call succeeds.
I used to use YAC and, if memory serves, it was kind of picky about what modems it supported. Did you enable exclusive access to the device in YAC?
babgvantKeymasterWhat sw are you using to interact w/ the modem?
babgvantKeymasterI use SyncToy to fake folder dup on my file server. Works great.
babgvantKeymasterRAID just shifts the single point of failure from the drive to a controller. IMO, it’s not worth the added complexity and risk unless going with a much more expensive controller (i.e. no built in or cheap addin cards). I don’t know how true it is currently, but there was a time when many of the lower end controllers relied on the host CPU for parity calculations and lacked sufficient cache so in some cases it was actually slower than a JBOD config too. FWIW, I JBOD and use the synctoy to fake folder duplication across spindles. Pretty sure Michael (Mikinho) uses RAID on his system, hopefully he can chime in and maybe provide some perspective from the other side 🙂
I do think fewer, larger drives is the way to go. Not only is it a better value, but leaves room and capacity for future expansion when you need it (and you can never have too much storage :)).
babgvantKeymasterwhy so many disks?

The first question is whether or not you want to hear your PC when watching TV. How tolerable would you be of it? If you don’t want to hear it, then I would recommend building a server and using small HTPCs or extenders at the TV. While you certainly could build a quiet HTPC with lots of storage and still be quiet, it will take a decent amount of planning, effort, and money. (Not that a server is going to wind up saving you money, mind you.)

I agree w/ George; unless you have a high tolerance for noise unless you have a rack system in a closet somewhere putting all that disk in your A/V stack is going to be problematic.
Also, you stated that the Xbox would be an extender. If memory serves, they’re quite loud, aren’t they?

The 360 slims are quiet, if you have older revs it might be an issue.
babgvantKeymasterI would expect VFDs that work with Vista to also work with W7, do you have a specific e.g.? I’ve used a lot of displays including the NMEDIA, LCD2USB, HD44780 and the one in the Moneual 320 and they all work in W7.
The HD160 is a nice case, but kind of difficult to work with (you have to take it apart to do anything). I think the VFD works w/ W7, but I haven’t tested it personally.
Have you checked out Antec Fusion line? I think the VERIS is full ATX and has good cooling options.
babgvantKeymasterI haven’t used Samsung’s BD players, but I believe the higher end models have Netflix, Amazon VOD and VUDU support. FWIW, I wouldn’t write of Vizio’s hardware; they offer a compelling feature set at a very competitive price point.
If you have a Sam’s Club or Costco membership they both offer a 90 day return policy on electronics so there’s an easy/low risk way to try out the player that catches your eye.

the GT25 is arguably the best plasma on the market.

I think you mean VT25 : )
Not a bad deal though.
babgvantKeymasterIf you haven’t updated the NIC drivers on the WHS in a while, that might be worth a go as well.
