I like the concept of being able to swap out the boards. This way you can customize the AVR to the types of inputs most relevant to your system and upgrade in the future. The key will be to see how well they manage the upgrade boards. For this to take off they really need to follow through on the upgrades.
I completely agree – it’s one of the things I really like about using a HTPC. That said, you can buy and throw away a lot of mid-range AVR for $4k 🙂

Also if I use the WHS app to move recorded TV off the HTPC is the network smart enough to route the data straight from the server to the XBOX or does the HTPC play it and does the extender watch it through a terminal service view?
I believe that all streams are split on the server (7MC) which means it won’t play directly off the WHS.

I tested it with a Panasonic TC-P58VT25 directly and through a Denon AVR-1909 as well as directly attached to a Panasonic TH-C42FD18.

FWIW, I haven’t been able to make ffdshow work properly for TV (I use it for dvd and videos only).

You need to re-regsvr32 the new rev of ac3filter each time sage installs, so that might be part of the problem if you’ve been installing the betas.

Are you running the latest drivers for your video card? Are you using the latest rev of AC3Filter or the one that comes w/ Sage?

As far as replacing the board with another chipset w/o reinstalling Windows it works sometimes, but I wouldn’t do it.

Sorry – I meant which build (i.e. 1.1.0.5)?
