As long as the Windows UPnP framework is installed & working it should work.
babgvantKeymasterI’ve had a PC connected to my TV for a very long time, it would be hard for me to replace it completely with other things. One of the reasons for this is, as you note, the inherent flexibility to access all sorts of content and experiences not available from a streamer.
I’m not sure why some people thing a keyboard doesn’t belong in the A/V stack. Frankly, there are some tasks, like typing URLs or other complex data entry (like searching on the Roku), where a keyboard is much nicer. It’s actually becoming more common to see typical CE products including some sort of keyboard in the mix as the devices become richer (more PC like).
FWIW, instead of a cheap laptop you may want to look at an Intel NUC (the Haswell ones should be out soon) or something similar (e.g. ZBox). LMK if you have anymore questions, getting started with a HTPC can be a little complex.
babgvantKeymasterI’m kind of surprised that the IOGEAR keyboard broke. Mine is still going strong and it’s been a few years – maybe you got a bad one? Six weeks might still be under warrenty.

Yes, but on pcPicker I have a similar result, so there is my main concern…..

Do you think with the 150w brick it’s OK?

Without seeing their work, it’s hard for me to comment on how the number is generated. I can really only say that it does not match my findings or experience with this CPU (the main power pull).
Unless the PSU is grossly ineffiencient, I cannot see how it would be a problem. I would certainly build a system like this and be perfectly comfortable running it off a 150W brick. I have done so in the past with a 150W picoPSU and similar components. That said, without actually testing it I can’t verify that it would work.

http://www.thermaltake.outervision.com/Power puts it at around 148w draw off the items you named (it may use a little less or more depending on item specifics). And that’s without running any USB devices, PCI cards, etc. So you’ll be pushing that power supply really tight.

I don’t belived the tool is accurate.
Testing a similar system with a standard ATX PSU, the most I pulled off the wall was 50W. Adding a laptop HDD to the mix will only add a few watts to that.
babgvantKeymasterWhat are your goals?
babgvantKeymasterIt should work fine with the right adapter.
That’s a crazy amount of dGPU to put in a HTPC. Unless you’re gaming as well, something smaller might be better (and quieter).

Just to make sure I understand, though, my Harmony 890 will be able to send a command that the Inteset receiver will get and wake the computer up from S4 or S5?
It should work that way yes. Give me a day (or two), and I can make sure it works properly on the RL.

Verified.

Anything you’d do differently after getting into it?

I can’t think of anything glaring. I started small with clear goals (door locks & basic family area lighting) and built up from there to include a security system, most of the lights in the house, the garage door, and some cameras. It will be really hard to go back to “normal” :).
If you have a huge house Z-Wave’s range might be an issue, but it wasn’t for me and there are workarounds (e.g. multiple orchestrated controllers) so I still think that Z-Wave is the right technology and Mi Casa Verde Vera the right controller in most cases. I plan to pick up another Vera and start over w/ UK kit when they get refreshed in a couple months.
babgvantKeymasterI love it. No weirdness that I didn’t cause myself (e.g. DTB will launch Vera scenes in WMC, so I would find my “TV lights” on in the middle of the night when the system woke up to record something or do a backup).
Only selling it because it won’t work in the UK (different frequency/electrical system). Definitly going to build another system as soon as I can over there.

Any suggestions for Haswell mobo’s with CIR?
DH87RL has CIR and an Intel NIC. It’s very easy if your case has somewhere to put it. Just plug in the module to the header and install the drivers.
babgvantKeymasterYou should be able to use a standard WMC IR receiver (or CIR of the motherboard has it) to receive + EventGhost, they will wake the PC.
Get a board with an Intel NIC. It will save you some headaches later.
babgvantKeymasterWhether you can use an IPG will depend on how serious a gamer you are. A dGPU is required if it’s the demanding FPS type.
Wake from S3 is a function of the driver, so it’s up to USB-UIRT to support it or not. The motherboard shouldn’t play a role unless it was truely ancient and didn’t provide power to USB devices in standby.
What is your budget? Unless it’s really limited a Haswell i5 (which gives you the option to try the IPG) w/ 8GB DDR-1600, 120GB SSD, etc is a good starting place.
babgvantKeymasterThe problem with audio is probably something with the HDMI audio driver included with Catalyst. So after checking everything, if it still doesn’t work go into Device Manager and find the HDMI audio device and manually select the AMD/ATI HDMI driver.
The “Video files are not working or not installed…” error usually indicates that something is wrong with DirectShow. If you have a codec pack installed, get rid of it and see what happens. DVDs should play OOTB.
