Yes, this was thought I had that I mention in the Cons. I thought a shelf w/ window for IR would be nice above the card reader. But…I’m also in the camp that sees the value of using some sticky tape to attach your IR receiver to the bottom of your tv. Included IR I dislike – because they almost never include a standard IR receiver (in my mind there are only two – USB-Uirt and MCE Receiver – anything else is useless). Even building in a shelf with an IR glass window is not necessarily a feature that every one will use.
[/quote]I’ve gotten by for five years on the IRTrans module that is in my origen X11 case. Sometimes I wish I had a USB-Uirt, but I’ve never really needed it either. But I also currently have an issue where my coffee table is in the line of site for my remote-HTPC which is annoying, so I wouldn’t mind having a tape-job ir receiver right now.
What do people do about IR receivers with a case like this? Personally, I would rather trade the integrated card reader for integrated IR.

thanks for the help. I like your idea, but it won’t work for me in this case. I’ve looked through a bunch of cases at newegg and found some that will definitely work. I’ll remeasure the space again tomorrow– if this space is bigger than 7 inches, I’ll have even more cases to pick from. I’m a fan of Antec cases, and all of their tower like cases are at least 8 inches wide with the exception of a couple that use tiny power supplies.
I don’t have to put the computer in this little cubby, but its free space. If I put it on the desk, then I either have to get smaller LCD screens or lose desk space. So its advantageous to try and find a case to fit in that space, but not to the point where it greatly hinders the functionality (current or future).

There isn’t a hard requirement for a full sized power supply, but the space I have is big enough to accommodate a full height pci slots and atx power supply. It just seems like getting something more narrow with a proprietary PSU would specialize this case more than I need and limit any upgrade possibilities for later.
Can the rackmount chassis, like the one you linked stand upright?

Watched The Event last night. Caught the interest of my wife and I. I’ll probably stick it out for another couple of episodes.

Is the $150 a pre-order special or is that going to be the normal price?

I don’t want to hijack the thread, but I was planning to post a related question. I’m giving my in-laws a receiver and speakers and want to turn an old PC or laptop into a music box.
I’m trying to decide what software/OS to use for this purpose. I expect that it will be used primarily for mp3 and pandora or other streaming services. My father-in-law is computer illiterate, so whatever I go with has to be super easy to use. Originally, I was just going to load up W7 and use media center for playback with the simple interface, but remembered that boxee is free and easy to use.
The PC I want to use is an old HP P4 system with only 512mb or ram, but I’m hoping to find some old PC3200 sitting around to beef that up a bit.
