On copy protection, it looks like option A and D are the same?
Also in case you want, they have a list on TiVoCommunity forums.

brennokYeah I was thinking that and I just didn’t feel like going through the hassle of RMAing it only to find that wasn’t the case. I emailed Gigabyte Support and they basically had no advice so I figured better to just walk away for now.
brennokYeah and it ended in failure lol. I built a i5-2500K with the Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3P-B3 with 8GB of DDR3 1600 using the Seasonic 660 in a Corsair 600T SE.
Everything was going fine until I added the Ceton InfiniTV4. As soon as I did the computer wouldn’t load past the loading operating system screen without rebooting and it didn’t matter which PCI-E slot I used.
I ended up just RMAing everything back to Amazon except the memory and Ceton card, and I put the Ceton InfiniTV4 and the memory in my i7 system bumping it to 16GB.
Thanks though. I figure I will put my build plans on hold for a couple months or at least until I finally upgrade my bedroom TV so I can actually hook it up directly.
brennokSorry I must be missing something. I was able to create a user group with my two Media Center users. Now I did it on my Media Center PC. Since this is a network share that is mapped as a network drive would I actually do this on my WHS?
When I try to edit permissions or add groups to the folder to edit them since it is my WHS, it isn’t giving me the option to edit/add them and location is locked to the WHS.
brennokI found the MCX users under users for my two extenders. I glanced at them but didn’t see a way to set permissions on them. The drives are network shares and the MCX users weren’t among the list of users.
I will see if I can figure out how to set up a user group for the extenders when I get home from work. I have never messed with it since previously didn’t have the need.
Thanks.
brennokCool I will check those out. I have had Intel in the past and don’t remember having issues. I think I just found a good deal on a Gigabyte board and just have stuck with them since. I think my last Intel board was the 975BX2 also known as the Bad Axe 2. It is probably still around here somewhere.
brennokAssuming I go with something like the i5-2500, any boards you would recommend? I find myself going with Gigabyte lately since I have always had good luck with them, but open to other ideas.
brennokOk cool, thanks. Now to start researching potential builds.
brennokMy plan is to record locally. Even when I build a HTPC it will be for local recording only.
brennokI would also like to see one since I just bought the Ceton InfiniTV 4 due to the Newegg Business sale and I don’t have a HTPC to put it in :).
brennokYeah I was looking at the Drobo site last night. It sounds like they have come a long way. I know originally people complained about how slow they were, but it is definitely something to consider. The more I read about WHS2011 the more I may rule it out. It seems to have so many backup limitations that it probably wouldn’t work for my house due to the 2tb limits. I have an older computer which I may try to install wHS2011 on it this weekend to see how it works.
Foolish me also assumed my WHS was maxed out. I was in the console so I figured I would double check only to find I still had 2 old 300gb drives in my pool. I ordered one of the Hitachi 2TB 5k3000s on sale from Newegg this morning to upgrade one and after I confirm I am not having problems with compatability, which I have had in the past with random drives dropping out, I plan to upgrade the second one. This of course will only be a temporary band-aid.

brennok, have you considered using something like SyncToy or similar for your situation? It has its own set of pros/cons like WHS data duplication feature, but for the need that you describe, it should be considered.
You mention using WHS 2011 and it would be a good solution for you assuming you need the features it offers like backups for your PCs, remote access, etc. Going with WHS 2011 would allow you to retire your existing WHS and stick with a single machine to do all of your backup/server duties.

Truth be told I never looked into synctoy. I keep putting everything off hoping magically extra space will appear on my server :).
Most of WHS2011 features are overkill for me since I can keep WHS V1 for handling backups of my OS drives. I also don’t use remote access and never even got it working on V1 since my FiOS Westell router wouldn’t configure properly. Much of my playback happens on TiVos which actually copies shows from the server to the TiVo for playback so other than potentially slower transfer speeds I don’t have to worry about streaming issues some have with V1.
I have recently started looking briefly into a NAS to see if it would just solve my dilemma like George suggests, but I haven’t made much progress. My two active Win 7 machines have space for drives, but the one is maxed currently for Sata ports so I would have to look into an expansion card which I have heard mixed results. If I went this way I would probably have to add a 4 to 3 possibly hot swappable bay since I already have 6 drives in my main machine.
My other PC only has the OS drive so I could add I believe 4 more drives before I need an expansion. This of course brings me back to just backing up the recordings. Do I grab a Nas just to Sync/backup the 4 drives or do I use Win 7 to back up Drive D to Drive E?
As much as I hope it turns into a better solution, I am not entirely optimistic that the FCC will side with anyone other than the cable companies.
There are just too many ways it could go wrong.

We need to get companies just to abandon TAs and come out with a better solution. Maybe you should make a post telling people to comment to the FCC while they can especially with the next meeting on the 14th. I put one up on the green button in hardware, but who knows what good it will do.
