Is there a way to get mkv files to play back on a media extender? I’ve got a lot of shows in mkv format but it seems to be hit or miss getting them to play with both audio and video on an extender, if at all. I’ve had no problems getting them to play in Media Center on the main PC. I’ve got the Shark007 codec pack installed with Gabest’s media splitter as opposed to Haali per the recommended setup at the AVS Forums. The latest version of DivX Plus will supposedly allow mkv files to play on an extender but so far it doesn’t seem to be doing much for me. Could there be a conflict between the Gabest splitter and DivX that’s preventing DivX Plus from working? I’m not sure if I should be changing the settings in the Shark007 setup utility.
The confilct that you mention could very well be what’s happening. When I installed the RC of 7 I installed several different programs and it totally screwed my system up. That’s why I chose to install only DivX this time around.
Tonight I got a chance to mess around with this. I updated to the latest drivers after Windows auto installed its drivers. Restarted the PC and check the CPU useage and it was at 100%. So I shut it down and changed the card to another PCI slot. After I turned it back on, I checked the useage again and it was down to 10% or so. I tried playing a bluray and it played smoothly. It must’ve just been a conflict with the slot.

You will have to install Haali Media Splitter or DivX. In my past builds with XP and Vista I used Haali Media Splitter, but since DivX has a solution now I used it since I figured it might be a little “simpler”. Also, at the time I was having trouble when playing divx/xvid files where the audio was out of sync using Media Center’s native divx playback. I figured installing DivX might solve that. It didn’t. But be forewarned, I can play mkv’s in Media Center now, but I have an audio sync issue with it as well sometimes. It’s just sometimes though. We watch True Blood episodes in mkv and they can be done by the same person and one time it will work OK, and the next week it doesn’t. Lately, I usually just open TMT 3 and play it with that. Since it’s just a one time thing, I don’t mind pulling the mouse out to get it started.

I voted for photos. They’re just right there to see as you’re reading so you can see what they’re talking about just by glancing. Most video stuff I don’t bother to play, just because it takes more time, and also depending on the video or site, they normally don’t play well over my slow DSL.

WOW!
Now I have a picture that looks almost like the original source from my HD-DVR.I turned off most of the processing (noise reduction, edge, etc.). But the most important was to set Limited RGB (16 to 235) instead of Full RGB (0-255). Now the blacks are black and the whites are white.
The last thing: I’m not able to set the resolution to native 1360×768 60Hz. I’m now configured at 1280×720 60HZ with some overscan. CCC offers 1360×768 30 Hz, but not 60 Hz…
It was available via DVI, but not with HDMI…
Years ago I bought my son a 37″ HP LCD, and it only had component and HDMI inputs. I connected his PC to it with a DVI-to-HDMI cable. I could only set the resolution at 1280 x 720 even though the “MAX supported resolution” was 1360 x 768. It was explained to me on here something about only being able to do 1280 x 720 through HDMI. The card he had at the time was a Geforce FX5700 so I had to live with the overscan, but since I went to an x1800xt and now a 8800GS, I can adjust the screen position to where everything fits perfectly. It lowers the resolution to something crazy (like 11xx by 6xx), but at least I can see everything on the screen now.

Mikinho, you are saying there are different firmware versions of the VistaView card? I didn’t see anything on their website about firmware updates, only drivers. I didn’t try the latest drivers. I just wanted to see how the card performed, and I thought the installed driver would be good enough for that. I didn’t think it was going to bring the system to its knees, LOL. I may try the most recent drivers just to see if it does the same thing. Or I may forget it all together. I probably won’t watch a lot of TV outside on the projector any way. The last time I used this card was when I was using XP and SageTV on my HTPC. I “think” I might have used it when I tried out Vista, but I’m not sure. The strange thing about the VistaView card when I used it with SageTV was that the digital tuner worked, but Sage gave an error whenever I tried to use the analog portion…even though it was supposedly a card supported by Sage, and I think Matt said when he reviewed the card that it worked in Sage as well. Just not for me.

August 31, 2010 at 12:11 am in reply to: Re: Is component video and HD audio over HDMI possible? #623I look forward to replacing my Yamaha receiver one day. It has a 5.1 input and digital inputs, no HDMI. I use the analog inputs for watching bluray from the PC and the spdif when watching anything else. I just hate the difference in the volume levels between the 2. I have to turn the volume up more to get to the same level as spdif. The bass is much louder with spdif than analog. As I’ve been told here before, that’s because spdif has a spec for a bass boost.

I use a 2600xt in an older PC which is ancient by today’s standards when I use my projector outdoors. I have a 30′ DVI to HDMI cable ran under my car port (which is where I use the projector) and the image looks fine even on a beige canvas tarp. I would check your DVI to HDMI adapter cause your card “should” be fine even without native HDMI.
