I use mine all the time to watch MLB.TV, My Movies and Netflix.  It is also used for photo and home movie storage.  I haven’t done any upgrades my HTPC in a few years, I just use it.  I know the world loves streaming and I am a fan as well but when it comes down to it I rather watch a movie in Blu-Ray format over anything else.  Until streaming can look that good I’ll stick with my HTPC.

Based on years of recommendations my neighbor finally built a HTPC last month.  He’s now tirelessly moving all his DVD’s and even converted VHS onto it. I need to tell him about this site now that I think of it.

My HTPC is stable so unless there is an advantage in going to Win 8 for the HTPC I will be staying with Win 7.

Movement on a Plasma TV also just looks more natural than an LCD IMHO.  I have a 50″ Panasonic Plasma and I just love it.  When my neighbors got a 47″ LCD I had to resist asking “What’s wrong with the motion?” cause I knew that was an issue.

The PC was going to sleep, even when I set it not to.  I also set the USB to not go to sleep and for good measure I set the power buttons to do nothing – I know this is over kill but with it still going to sleep after I set it not to I wasn’t taking any chances.  So thanks again shadymg your post set me in the right direction.

just checked it, the IR receiver drops out of device mgr when i go over to directv.  If I unplug it and plug it back in it shows back up.

It still shows in device manager, and searching more on the issue today I found that it might be a Win7 32 bit issue only, 64 bit Win7 users aren’t having the problem.

                jbachman2

                  Hi Mike,

I will double-check the sleep settings because I am not 100% sure what they are set at but as of last night when I went from the HTPC to Directv and back again the MCE interface was still up, not a login screen or anything like that.

It seems to me that in Vista the IR receiver was much more active (blinking intermittently even if commands were not being sent) but now it only lights up when I am actively using the MCE.

Since everything I read about this points to a driver issue and with MCE remotes being so inexpensive, I would not be against getting a new one, however I really didn’t see many Windows 7 certified remotes, they all seem to be Vista certified.  If anyone is running a similar setup and isn’t having this issue let me know what remote and I guess more importantly what IR receiver and I’ll look into getting one.  Just BTW, I am also using a wireless keyboard / mouse combo and it does not have any issues dropping with dropping it’s connection when I switch between functions.

Yes, netflix streaming works via a web browser.  When I look in add / remove programs I see silverlight and netflix listed as installed.  I have uninstalled both and tried the reinstall but none have corrected the issue.

I installed hulu desktop and then the MCE HULU add in that the guy who wrote Secondrun.tv has on his legacy site and also My Movies installed without issue so I would not think a permissions issue would be the problem.  However, I am at a loss right now as to why it isn’t working when it worked in the past and no hardware changes were made.  I have to tell ya, WAF right now is at a all time low for the HTPC (and probably for me too).

                    jbachman2

I am going to take the receiver out of the loop tonight and see if that makes a difference.  Beyond that, I may look into the GT 430 at some point.  My fall back position would be to reinstall the 9400 GT card and worry about HD Audio another day.

I’ll check and see if there is a bios update for my mobo while I am at it.  Thanks for your help and if / when it is resolved I’ll post what happened.

                      jbachman2

I mention I am using a HD Fury 2 and now I feel like I have a Scarlett Letter :oP

Still won’t reboot to the HDMI output but I have it setup as the single monitor now and it looks like I can toggle between Directv and the HTPC so I guess I’ll not reboot ever at least until I get sick of doing that and just reinstall my 9400 GT…

                        jbachman2

That is correct.  Of course with the 9400 GT I guess it was even more complicated:

                          HTPC (Nvidia) >Component> ONKYO >HDMI> HDFury2 >COMPONENT> PLASMA

                          jbachman2

Correct, if the plasma is the only thing hooked up nothing ever displays on the screen.

Yeah, the Nvidia 9400 GT worked great but I was using the component connections, not the DVI or VGA.

Full path disclosure: HTPC via HDMI to Onkyo TX-SR608 to HD Fury 2 via HDMI to Component connections on the Plasma screen.

                            jbachman2

If I have the plasma setup as a duplicate of the VGA monitor I will see the bios run thru on both screens but after all of the drives are detected the plasma will go blank and never show the windows screens, so there is an initial connection there but it doesn’t hold.

Red was awesome even though it confirms that trailers now a days give away too much of the movie.
