I having very similar problems in my setup. I too run WMC all the time and leave the HTPC up and running when I power down. I run into the issue with the handshake problem as well. Very interested to find out what your solution ends up being, as it is a nightmare for the WAF.
I use mine for gaming and now for ESPN to subsidise my lack of cable.

I should say that yes you should only have one set of video drivers installed at once. I dont know that Win 7 is absolutely needed, but it may make some things easier.

If it requires too much thought Joe-Public is pretty much disinterested (At least on the major networks). Particularly thought outside the box of everything else that has been on for years is frowned upon and met with a hatred of change.
