Mike GarcenParticipant
Looks like a migration issue, you do have two accounts. You’ve got e-mail to help straighten it out.
thanks!
Mike GarcenParticipantwow, that’s a nice deal! when will Microcenter wake up and make deals available online
Mike GarcenParticipanti’m identical to you on those steps. I’ve never even thought to use Easy Transfer Wizard.
Only point i’ll make now, is i’ll use TeraCopy to do my copying and pasting 🙂
Mike GarcenParticipantpretty sweet. what’re the requirements to use the “upgrade” licenses versus a full one? Just have to insert a previous DVD at some point?
Mike GarcenParticipantTheGreenButton is dead. Long live TheRedButton?
So…should we keep that forum & name? 🙂

well, event viewer was how i got the error 1603 message. Unfortunately there’s no other details as far as i could find. Pretty frustrating. That thread George linked didn’t show much either.
*sigh*

You couldn’t find anything related to this part?
“You must analyse the %Temp%SCSMInstall0X.log (X – increased on each atempt to install) by yourself or provide additional information about error from this log file. “
I was hoping there would be a similar log file on your system.

That log file didn’t exist for me :-/

Mike GarcenParticipantso, yes i had already uninstalled both WHS connectors that were previously installed on the system.
The computer name is 10 characters, and I even tried a short description for it as well, no joy.
George, will read through that thread, thanks.
Mike GarcenParticipantsonofa…aaron by gosh u got it. i disabled IPv6 and voila, server can ping client, and client can ping server (and it shows IP address)!!
So…stupid question…do i lose anything by not having IPv6?
Thanks aaron
Mike GarcenParticipantok, so i see this on the server:

Mike GarcenParticipantok, so i ran arp -d on both server and client. still same thing.
when i did arp -a, i see the following:

239.255.255.250 01-00-5e-7f-ff-fa staticMike GarcenParticipantthe problem is truly the HD cable and if it’s copy protected. If what you watch IS PROTECTED, then the solution is going to be ugly no matter what you decide.
I’d recommend testing it out. Record some shows on your system (your favorites) and then go to another system on your network and see if you can play it (you can also see the copy protection status on the “Info” screen on Recorded TV at the bottom). If it’s copy free, then you can go ahead with your thin client idea.
If it’s not, then it’s murky. The XBox360 is the only solution which will do both. If you’re OK with separate devices, you could do something like a Roku for Netflix, and then stick to an MCX extender for TV and everything else (could probably get good deals on D-Link or Linksys used on ebay). Then the issue is having to toggle between two devices.
Mike GarcenParticipantyes, it can ping itself via it’s server name, but it’s strange, it shows the MAC address and not the IP:
Pinging SERVERNAME [fe80::XXX:f7XX:6fXX:1XX%XX] with 32 bytes of data:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0msMike GarcenParticipantIs why you’ll need the Gold Membership. There is no Netflix integration in MCE on an Extender session, but it IS on the XBox360 dashboard and the UI is very friendly. But…it is outside the MCX. And you do need Gold membership.
Mike GarcenParticipantSo let’s start at the basic one:
- If you want CableCARD, you have to choose Windows 7 (you CAN use SageTV however, but Win7 is a must. No linux)
- Depending on where you live and the type of copy protection from Verizon, the problem with your Central server to other Client HTPC’s idea is Copy Protection. If a lot of what you watch is copy protected, you then won’t be able to watch it ANYWHERE except the server! Which is a problem if that’s not connected to a tv 😉
- Can you elaborate on why you want Thin-client PCs? Is there something in particular you need them–like browsing?
- The reason for #3, is because based on your needs, a Windows Media Center Extender may be your best (and most affordable) bet. You could plop some XBox 360’s in each room, and then not only will you be able to share the Guide and recordings anywhere, but it’s a lot less maintenance since you only have to manage the Win7 server itself.
#3 is the biggest question back to you which will establish everything else
