Mike GarcenParticipant
great post jeff, you’ve got quite an impressive setup there…you must’ve known i was going to ask the following question: Pictures???? 🙂
Ok, that aside, i have a question–why do you have two servers? Especially given the impressive size of one of them. Are you using WHS for the backup abilities? If speed is your biggest concern and you have a huge size, there are probably better solutions (like UNRAID, or FreeNAS)
For RecordedTV storage, that’s where the WHS is actually convenient, in that part of the updates are that it can transfer your recordings over to your WHS and then all your systems can see it.

I am actually more interested in the iPad version, especially since it appears hardware acceleration will be pushed onto the iPad (take some pressure off my WHS when transcoding is needed).

but why? are you going to connect your iPad to your big screen?

This honestly makes me want to get an ATV just to try it out and review.

I totally agree! Heck, i remember when i spent over $150 just to do this same thing on the OLD AppleTV….me thinks we may have to get one of these bad boys in house!!
Mike GarcenParticipantand just as i say that, check out the video Ben Drawbaugh just posted over at EngadgetHD:
Very impressive performance for an embedded client, especially at only $99! I might have to change my tune about this little guy
Mike GarcenParticipantROFL, he lies, he’s very proud of knowing. I though, am still ashamed to watch AI, although man….last night’s continued the funny. The best one was the guy who went to Idol Camp….and was TERRRRRIBLE. It was awesome.
Mike GarcenParticipantGreat job cgsheen! Hope you don’t mind I threw it on the front page. Man i wish that was my setup!!
Mike GarcenParticipantthis is definitely front page worthy! I don’t think anyone is really surprised, I look forward to seeing more people mod the AppleTV2. Would love to see someone’s reactions to how well this actually works on it
Mike GarcenParticipantYou do know that that very same Andy Van Til (Babgvant) is actually a senior editor at this very website, yes? 🙂
We can add it to the to-do list, I’m sure he could throw something together fairly quickly
Mike GarcenParticipantAI is nowhere near as bad as jersey shore, c’mon!!
And yeah…after 9 seasons you have to wonder. Last night there was that 1 girl who came back…i guess that could be their new flavor of the show (kind of like when the UFC Ultimate Fighter show did their “comeback” series)….but i’m totally opposite than you, i am all about the Auditions and the disasters 🙂

We (wife & I) actually STARTED watch AI just because of the new judges… And based on what we saw yesterday, we’re counting the days for the scandal to break between Steven Tyler & some (or all) of the contestants! lol
I actually thought it was a pretty good start for the new judges.

I agree, it’s an interesting twist given the fiasco’s in the past with Paula and some of the male contestants…definitely going to be some inappropriate moments 🙂 and man there were some train wrecks!
Mike GarcenParticipantdoes the HTPC go to sleep when you switch over to DirecTV? You said you read some attempted fixes, so have other people experienced the same?
What happens if you manually go and switch inputs over to your STB, and then back? Same issue? If not, maybe the Harmony remote is doing something…but that’s so odd.
When it stops working, is it still showing in Device Manager?
Mike GarcenParticipantwowza, 12 hard drives? You suuuuuuure you wanna go WHS on that? Both of those other server platforms I mentioned would be much slicker with that many drives. But as you said, setting up WHS is a snap…but hey, you could always just try FreeNAS out for example and if you don’t like it, then go the WHS route (before you start copying stuff over and then can never go back)
Mike GarcenParticipanthow are you connecting? what resolution? i’m not sure i’m following the haze you’re mentioning…any chance for a picture?
Mike GarcenParticipantwell, if you’re building from scratch you might want to take a look at FreeNAS? or UnDrive is actually quite popular (but not free). Both have somewhat of a learning curve though, but i’ve read a lot of good things about undrive.
What are your main needs/demands for this? What system specs will it have?
Mike GarcenParticipanti think the previous posters question was, if you copy a Blu-ray from your server to the actual client system, does it all play OK? reason for asking, is if the answer is 100% yes, then that helps you isolate what could be going on (whether its network which i assume, or the server itself)
