EVGA manufacturers my preferred NVIDIA cards. They have several newer G210 cards that are low profile and will perform at least as good as the 8500 GT.
A few of the G210 they offer are passively cooled but I actually prefer their single slot cards with fans since the fans are only on when needed.
In terms of NVIDIA cards the GT220 or GT240 would be a better card but I believe are only a few low profile GT220, none of which I particularly like.
I had a MSI G210 and currently own an EVGA G210, GT220 and GT240. My own experience with them started off poor with some color space issues and poor performance but they have fixed almost all the issues and the latest drivers have been very stable. The upside to their cards is CUDA and 3D support but unlike the ATI counterparts they do not support HD Audio bitstreaming.
You should also look a mid-range ATIAMD 5xxx series. I believe you have a few more choices for low profile cards.
Hopefully the GTS 430 is released this month as expected and it is in the same (low) price range as the HD5XXX series.

Very true, a combination of persistence settings and optionally cleared ones sounds like it would be optimal.

I personally think it should be an optional choice during the install. My reason is that that driver updates in an ideal world will improvefix settings so your custom settings will most likely no longer be accurate.

It could also be a wake timer if it happens in the middle of the night. You can disable it via the Advanced Power Options.
If you use or configure Media Center for instance it will wake to download the guide and to perform optional optimizations.

Below is my intended response.
I’ll try to answer to the best of my knowledge but I’m limited to the same public beta so I could easily be wrong.
1) I assume that these devices will be the equivalent to a Tivo box only running media center. Will the ordinary home user have direct access to the operating system similar to a standard OS install or will it boot directly into Media Center and the standard consumer will not have a way to access the OS?
It depends on the build implemented by the hardware manufacturer. I suspect most will opt to not include the Windows shell and have it boot directly into Windows Media Center.

2) Mikinho, you state that WS7PWS7C will support cable card, do you know if it supports the HD-PVR as well for satelite users?
I honestly don’t know but I can try it out tomorrow night.
3) Does WS7PWS7C support extenders?
I believe it does but I haven’t tested it at home yet so I’m not 100%. This could also be a case similar to CableCARD where it didn’t make it into the public beta but is in the final.
4) Given that it uses the same hardware platform as the boxee box, is cost expected to be in the same $200-250 range?
We can only hope.

It has to be only a matter of time before we see extenders….
I’ve been saying that for years….I think we will see Softsled released for WS7P only before we see another Extender architecture.

$85 + SH for the latest hardware revision.
$65 + SH for the original hardware revision. And while spring cleaning today I found the box for the original so that will be provided as well.
