The components you listed are good but as ruwacked mentioned I would start with an Intel HD integrated graphics.
Both the Core i3-5xx and Core i5-6xx series processors support the Intel HD Graphics when paired with an H55 or H57 chipset.
For a primary HTPC I disagree with ruwucked that an i5 is “way overkill”. I have an i3-540 and i5-670 (reviewed to be published in the near future) and I highly recommend both but absolutely prefer the i5 for a primary HTPC. For pure audiovideo playback either processor will suffice but if you run commercial detection software andor video conversion the i5 offers a significant improvement over the i3. It really comes down to what you want to accomplish.
I wouldn’t worry about the power supply, my i3-540 DH57JG idles at 24W and at load between 33W to 42W which is powered by a 102W picoPSU.
The i5-670 DH57DD didn’t use much more until I added added a few more drivers and peripherals
For 3D support the current Intel hardware does support 3D; Intel is working on adding 3D support to their HD Graphics lineup but we currently do know whether existing hardware will be forward compatible. I honestly would not worry about it. If needed you can always add a discrete card later when DX11 is more mainstream.
Just download and install from http://haali.su/mkv/. The default settings work out just fine.
If you have an under performing network switch and watch high frame rate MKVs over the network then increasing the buffer helps but I would only change it if you have stuttering issues.

My experience with DivX has been pretty poor. I try it out at each new release and I really want to use it as I want Media Foundation to do well but I always go back to Haali Media Splitter. It has its own share of bugs but for the most part it is stable. Another option is using the MPC-HC standalone MKV Splitter.
For the rare circumstance that Haali does have issues I wrote a Media Center add-in that lets me choose any 3rd party application to play movies with. For me it was ok to use the mouse on the rare occasion but not for my wife =) If you are interested in it just let me know and I’ll share.

LOL….especially with the new sage hd300 for only $50 more i can’t imagine anyone who is in this hobby would even consider an apple tv
The HD300 is extremely impressive but it doesn’t have Netflix or much online content as a stand-alone device.
For instance, my twin sister. She is a very smart person but not what I would consider computer savvy. She has an iPhone and MacBook. She is a Netflix subscriber. She enjoys social media. The Apple TV would be an easy choice at $99.

I think it will do very well with the non-techie crowd and college kids with existing Macs, iPhones, iPads. And that demographic far outnumbers the HTPC enthusiast.

I feel like that if you do video you should also provide images. I know I’m in the minority but I disable all video plug-ins in all my browsers and block most social media on my router. If there is a video alone good chance I won’t watch it.

Um I am not sure i understand. SageMCTuner lets you watch live tv but only on channels marked copy freely but using SageTv instead of MCE?
More or less. In the background SageMCTuner uses the 7MC APIs to schedule a recording and then streams that recording to SageTV so you’ll have a few seconds delay. I’m over simplifying it as well but it works.

Currently the InfiniTV4’s native support is limited to 7MC; however, Babgvant (Andy) released SageMCTuner that lets you use a CableCARD in SageTV. It is limited to Copy-Freely content and has a delay.
With CableLabs’ approved change to the OpenCable specifications Ceton + SageTV will be able to add native support for the InfiniTV4 + Copy-Freely content but currently no ETA for that.
