oliverredfoxParticipant
Starting to prep so I don’t have to redo all the computers at once. Is MCE Backuptool still the go to software for moving over recording schedules? I assume it is, but it’s been a while since I’ve needed to use it and it’s possible something else has come along.
oliverredfoxParticipantCurrently, you can snake 8gb of ram (G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model ) stacked with the 15% off desktop memory (72 hours): DM15AP11US for $64. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314 It’s a shell shocker price on the ram, so I don’t know how long it’ll stay marked down at $75 (pre-coupon).
oliverredfoxParticipantI’m all for it. I’m trying to be good and hold on to my money to pick up an i5 2500k when the Z68 chipset comes out. It’ll be fun for one more site to test my resolve until then. (I lasted all of 2 days. I went to look at one of those SSDs and got suckered into buying another 2tb hard drive.)
oliverredfoxParticipanthttp://www.amazon.com/Elite-Spectrum-Electric106X-Projection-motorized/dp/B002Z2QDT8 is another nice one (Specs at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824999229 ). Slight better viewing angle(140 vs 160), but the downside it’s 16:10 ratio. Do you know what the gain is on that one? (I’m so close to pulling the trigger on an motorized screen. The manual one I have does the job but I’m lazy and always leave it down which just looks bad in the room.)
oliverredfoxParticipantI recall seeing a post on TGB a while back about uninstalling .NET and Silverlight and between controlling the order they get reinstalled/updated and choosing a specific version of Silverlight that the issue can be fixed. I didn’t try it at the time and totally forgot to bookmark it. But might be worth searching for that post and trying it out.
oliverredfoxParticipantSlickdeals is the death of my wallet. It’s where I found my 50″ Samsung plasma w/2 pairs of 3d glasses for ~$750. Between there and Fatwallet, one can save all the way into the poor house. (I must avoid following that SDD deal you posted. Too many toys tempting me right now.)
oliverredfoxParticipantI always get a bit concerned as cable lengths get longer about the quality of cables; probably why monoprice sucks so much money out of me. At least the 25′ is through Amazon directly so returns/swaps on bad cables are easy enough.
oliverredfoxParticipantI’m running a 60gb Vertex2 too. Adding that in was a night and day difference with my day-to-day operations.
I feel so out of the loop on chipsets these days. Used to keep track of everything and read articles on upcoming products like my life depended on it. Now I barely pay attention to it. While looking up the z68, I came across this: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Intel-Z68-Chipset-to-Launch-on-May-8-194075.shtml Seems that the Quick Sync only works if you’ve got an H67 chipset (even with the lucidlogix workaround). I was narrowing down between two P67 motherboards to order later today. Now I think I’m going to have to dig around and look into the z68 when it comes out in a few weeks (Thanks, you just saved me $150 on what would’ve been a semi-gimped motherboard in the long run).
oliverredfoxParticipantThat’s pretty cool. I’ll have to muck around with that.
oliverredfoxParticipantFrom what I’d read, I don’t think I can use Quick Sync with my separate video card installed. I’m under the impression that the onboard GPU turns off when using a PCI-E video card. Unless the article I read about that was outdated and a work-around exists (would be awesome).
I think you’re right, I’m probably fine with slightly lower speeds I’d get off the i5 given my satisfaction with the Q6600. I have a voice in the back of my head that makes me ponder pushing tech as far as I can when I buy new stuff. Just wanted to make certain I wasn’t going to have a DUH moment in week from now for not buying the i7.
Thanks for the replies from both of you =)
oliverredfoxParticipantI glanced around a little at this device, cool little tablet. From what I saw, one person on a forum tried it and didn’t have any luck getting an HDMI>VGA cable to work( http://ep121.wordpress.com/2011/01/08/the-ep121-product-tour/comment-page-1/#comment-431 ). Of course, with only reading about one person’s luck, I’d take it with a grain of salt (the person might be clueless about how to set the driver to output). If you’re like me and have a box full of random AV/computer cables laying around, I’d try to hook it up and see if it works myself just in case.
oliverredfoxParticipantSome devices support HDMI to VGA. Same way DVI to VGA works on video cards. Look around and see if your tablet does. Could save you a bunch of money. If you post the model of your tablet, someone here might know more specifically.
oliverredfoxParticipantThe two fixes I have bookmarked are:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977116
Hopefully one of those are of use for you.
oliverredfoxParticipantThey were boxed up well but they haven’t been plugged in over 2 decades. Would be a bit concerned if the casing on the wires have turned brittle or if the capacitors have leaked. Stuff used to built pretty solid back then, might even still run without needing (much) work. I’d be curious if any of the disks I packed with them still have a magnetic charge.
I still have fond memories of using a ball point pen, a $5 radio shack light sensor, and some cables to make a light pen for the C64. Between that and the SID chip, it had some great features that disappeared with the early IBM compatibles.
oliverredfoxParticipantStill have my old C64 w/tape drive and monitor sitting in a box next to my Apple IIgs. Wish I’d kept my original Apple II and Macintosh.
