If you’re using HDMI, I picked up an HDMI Detective Plus the other day. While it was a little annoying having to spend $85 on a hardware solution, it works great. My computer always thinks the TV is there regardless of what I’ve got the TV or receiver set to. I spent the past year messing around with various software fixes and never found anything that worked 100% for me. I kinda wish I’d just bought it in the 1st place, but if you’re like me, you’ll be on the fence about wanting to buy it (It was 2x the cost of my HTPC video card and that just bothers me on principal, but for what should be years of trouble free operation, I can live with the cost).
oliverredfoxParticipantDo not need this, do not need this, do not need this, oh but I want this… I come for the articles, I leave with new toys. I’m starting to mess around with filming HD video and rapidly filling my hard drives. I might just have to hop on this deal.
oliverredfoxParticipantWorked perfectly. =) Took a lot longer to set up but the end results are nice.
oliverredfoxParticipantFrom my end:
30gb OCZ Oynx would randomly disappear in one system, works great in the 2nd computer and now it stays there full time.
60gb OCZ Vertex 2 works great but doesn’t play nice with sleep mode on either of my computers. But with how fast it resumes from hibernate, it’s a moot point.
At this point, I’ve gotten so used to running my main apps off the SSD that I really want a bigger one so I don’t have put larger apps on of the HDD. And other than what appears to be some weird hardware compatibility between my SSDs and certain motherboards, they work well. It does make me wonder why a standardized format like SATA when done via SSD doesn’t play nice with certain systems (perhaps they do something slightly off spec).
oliverredfoxParticipantThanks for the quick reply, sounds like it’ll do what I want. They’re both ATI 550 Pro tuners. I figured I’ll keep one hooked right the cable line (as it currently is) and hook the other via s-video to the STB (and dig out my IR blaster connectors).

You have a choice with SD tuners to choose STB or Cable setup. You can have both if you like.

That’s exactly what I’m looking for. =) It’ll be nice to take advantage of the free STB for the few extra channels (well, not really free since I have to pay HOA dues for it…) without having to pay for a 2nd STB.

Google purchased Moto Mobility, which was at one point a division of Moto. Moto and Moto Mobility seperated in Jan. 2010.
The purchase will not affect the STB market as Moto Mobility doesn’t produce them.

Actually, the set top division seems to be a part of Motorola Mobility but there is a lot of speculation that they’ll just sell it off. http://www.slate.com/id/2301856/pagenum/all/

Have you tried out Andrew’s DVRMSToolbox?
I was unaware that it supported QuickSync. That may influence my choice when I do my next HTPC CPU upgrade. Now if only x264 would support QuickSync.
oliverredfoxParticipantHave they improved MediaExpresso’s settings when using QuickSync? I tried the demo a few months ago and found it lacking. While Badaboom2 gave more options for controlling the output. (Love to find a good opensource encoder that uses QuickSync)

LOL. I love auto-correct. It felt sweat was better than sweet.
oliverredfoxParticipantThat 128GB one is tempting me, but I keep hoping for the price to hit the $100 sweat spot when it becomes an pure impulse buy.
oliverredfoxParticipantI thought it was really good. And from what I’ve read about how season 4 will start, it sounds like they’re going to play right off the season 3’s ending really strongly.
oliverredfoxParticipantGiven all the talk on the Kuro and it’s PQ, I’m kinda surprised the videophiles around here haven’t chimed in on this. I’m kinda curious what effect more video minded people think this might have.

that people would put cardboard up against the glass…still necessary?
I’d use some thick corrugated cardboard or a piece of plywood. You could probably build a pretty rock solid crate for the TV for $10-20 worth of parts from home depot, but that might be overkill.
oliverredfoxParticipantMake sure the box you put it in allows it to sit upright. Don’t want it laying flat or if you hit a bump, the glass will shatter.
oliverredfoxParticipantI see I’m not the only one that gets hit by it a lot.
