The 5600 was a great AVR for the day (1996).  It cost be a bundle too!!  Now in my garage.  Ouch.

      I only curse it when:

      – Harmony remote gets out of sync with on/off.  There is no discrete IR for on/off.

      – Whenever I have to configure the digital audio input assignments.  You have to have it hooked to a TV (composite video) to change most of the configuration items and in my current garage setup it is audio only.   I have a relatively long RG6 cable that I screw on some RCA adapters to and run across the hood of my car over to the TV temporarily to make these sorts of adjustments.

      – Whenever I have to move it.  The darn thing is heavy!

      – So far, it doesn’t seem to output anything to the sub output for normal stereo sources over SPDIF.  I’m not yet sure what I’m going to do here, I suspect I need to hook it in parallel with the front speaker terminals.

Definitely sounds like a cable or cable to port interface issue. No need to apologize for your Denon. I just replaced a 3300 Surprised

Probably a cabling issue on my not being able to get it to work.  Definitely not helped by the fact that Intel/Realtek seem confused on which output to activate based on which output you select in control panel.  How they got that wrong on the DH67CF and got it right on the DH67BL (pretty much same thing, different form factor), I don’t know.

This is crazy stuff.  I decide to pull it out of its environment (garage) and try hooking up to the living room system.  Different receiver and all.  The garage system has a really old A/V receiver (Denon AVR-5600) — I know, the thing is a dinosaur, but it is a really nice amp and for basic use in the garage, what the heck.  So, I hook it up to the Yamaha HTR-5063 in the living room, and… it works right away…

So… I put the HTPC back in the garage and it works there too.  Still using the Realtek Digital Output (not optical) of course, so that problem is still there.  Maybe there is some soft of cabling issue here.  I’m using a new cable from monoprice, which BTW, I opted for their premium cables (still good price) but I really do not like the ends they put on them.  I guess I will try their non-premium ones next — they are quite large, and on a system like the DH67CF the end touches the very edge of the I/O shield.  Same goes for hooking up large HDMI ends on this board.  It looks to me like Intel could have raised the whole set of hookups in the I/O shield by 3/16″ or so…

Anybody also have a DH67CF that can try optical just to verify the output mix-up in control panel?

At least now I can contact Intel and say it is working again, just with the wrong selection in control panel.

So, I went to contact Intel about reporting the problem I had as a bug, and then by the time I got to walking them through the problem, audio via optical just stopped working entirely, no matter which output was used.  That was when just 30 minutes before it was working (albeit on the wrong output selection).

An hour chat later, they are going to investigate.  And… I may try some more things around here over the weekend should I have a chance and the weather is poor…

            RehabMan

I installed it on my desktop machine.  It installs same version, 6392, so it appears Intel is up-to-date with respect to Realtek drivers.

It happens with both the latest driver 6392 (from intel.com) and with the generic one you get from Windows after removing the driver.

I’ve seen this happen before as well.  I’m not sure if I ever figured out exactly what was going on, but I think it has something to do with making a folder the recording location when that folder was already monitored by the Recorded TV library.  From now on when I intend to set the recording location, I first make sure that folder is not included in the Recorded TV library.

I see you’ve got all that memory there (8GB), and it would seem a shame to waste over half of it, but you could go 32-bit temporarily until Intel fixes the 64-bit side of things.  From what I can tell so far, 32-bit doesn’t have the issue… at least not with my Intel motherboard based core i3-2100T and pentium G620T systems.

                        RehabMan

You might have a bad CPU.  I just upgraded my main HTPC to an i3-2100t and the first chip I received was bad.  One thing strange was that the CPU worked for the first install, then a couple of days later failed to boot.  I thought maybe corruption issue or driver issue, so attempted to re-install then discovered that Windows install media wouldn’t boot.  Of course, I had to rebuild the system several times, using different motherboard, different power supply, different RAM, etc, before it boiled down to a bad chip.

in reply to: Another update.  Got the new #4351
                          RehabMan

Another update.  Got the new i3-2100t through provantage.com RMA process (they were great folks to deal with, BTW… highly recommended).

The new chip solved all the problems and my system is back up and running.  Fast enough (ie. definitely slightly faster than the core i3-530 it replaced) and running very quiet.

I’ve also rec’d the two G620T and have built mini-ITX systems for a couple of satellite locations (guest house, and garage).  Nice little chip — no speed demon like the i3-2100 but very nice with the power usage and does everything I need it to do in these locations.  Passmark CPU score is in the 1800-1900 range, so it beats the AMD 5800+, and really blows away the AMD 4200+ the new systems replace.

Now I’ve just got my new WHS 2011 server to build.  Which will be a necessary thing, as the Vista-32 drivers you need to use for WHSv1 for the DH67CF boards don’t work with the WHSv1 client restore disk.  I had intended on using a WHS restore process to simply clone the guesthouse to garage system as they are almost identical.  No joy — instead had to setup both systems from scratch even though they would be almost the same.  Could not get the network to work during client restore.  Hopefully WHS 2011 is better in its driver support.  Does no good to do backups if you can’t use them when they are needed.  Having WHSv1 using Vista as its client restore foundation definitely is not a good thing.

One other note: It sure is nice to deal with the Intel motherboards.  Very nice Intel NICs… even the driver configuration section is nice — it even has help for the various settings.  Very nice BIOS upgrade process.  Also no crazy fan at full blast during boot or wake from sleep.  And it was really nice to deal with the “software for adults” that Intel has in the Intel Desktop Utilities (my only previous experience was with the ASUS stuff, where the UI looks like it is designed for teenagers).

Awesome.  Pulled the trigger on (my second) Ceton card from Erwin Computer.  I was waiting for the HDHRPrime, but no more.  I’ll place this Ceton in my WHS2011 box and it will serve my HTPCs for the garage and guest house.  I’ll leave my original Ceton in my main HTPC for now until I’m sure the Ceton network sharing works well.

                              RehabMan

I’ve had a couple of these AV-GP drives in my HTPC.  The first one was a 500GB drive which seemed to work great.  I recently upgraded it to a 1TB drive and now I notice the occasional stutter.  Is it a problem with the drive or something else?  Was the 500GB drive better or did I just not notice it happening before?  I tend to suspect something else (software) on the PC is causing it…

I’m tempted to start disabling services and background tasks slowly until I don’t see it any more, but it is so rare, I’m not sure I’d ever be sure of the cause/effect (it happens maybe once for every 2 hours playback).

Most of all I wonder if it is the anti-virus software (Microsoft Security Essentials) as I sometimes see it running in the background on my laptops/desktops when I least expect it… and to tell you the truth I question the necessity of running anti-virus on a dedicated WMC machine.  I don’t run anti-virus on my WHS server either and could probably do the same on my HTPC.

Things to try… things to try…
